The Devil's Porridge Museum, Annan Road, Eastriggs, DG12 6TF.
The Devil's Porridge Museum tells the story of the greatest factory on earth in World War One. It employed 30,000 people,
12,000 of whom were women. Here they did vital war work mixing the devil's porridge (a nickname coined by Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle for cordite, an explosive material like gunpowder which went inside every bullet and shell used in World War
One). The Ground Floor of the Museum is dedicated to the history of this factory and its transformative effect on this
region, the women who worked there and the War. The Museum displays look at the Solway Military Coast from 1939 onwards.
It includes a look at evacuees to this region from Glasgow, the bombing of Gretna in 1941, RAF Annan and the production
of munitions at ICI Powfoot. We also have a display looking at Chapelcross, Scotland's first nuclear power station where
visitors can enjoy a virtual reality experience. The Museum is fully accessible with a lift, toilets with baby changing
facilities and a café. In 2019, it was shortlisted for the 'Most Family Friendly Museum in the UK' award and is open daily
from 10am. Group visits are welcome. For further information, visit our website or Tel: 01461 700021.
