#SIDs4Youth: Tamoy, A Master Class in Sustainability

TAMOY CAMPBELL: UNESCO Youth, Peace and Security Support Group Member 2023, Jamaica shares her experience at the SIDS 4 global Children and Youth Action Summit.

Hi Tamoy, tell us about your experience in Antigua and Barbuda!

Antigua and Barbuda is a beautiful paradise that I was thrilled to visit. Beyond the allure of its natural beauty, I was eager to serve as a delegate representing Jamaica and, by extension, the Caribbean region at the SIDS Children and Youth Action Summit (CYAS).

My experience at CYAS was extraordinary. I had the privilege of meeting like-minded youth committed to sustainability, climate justice, youth development, and various other causes. Additionally, as a UNICEF Media Correspondent, I covered events, interviewed delegates, and shared my expertise—an incredible opportunity to blend my passion for law and media.

The Summit featured insightful masterclasses, with the policy masterclass being my favorite. It deepened my understanding of policy drafting and its complexities. The facilitators were engaging and dynamic, making the sessions highly rewarding. Moreover, the Summit was a fantastic networking platform. Connecting with people from across the globe was exhilarating. I forged not only professional bonds but also friendships with youth leaders from the Caribbean, AIS, and Pacific regions.

A standout moment for me was the Cultural Fashion Show. Delegates showcased stunning cultural attire that incorporated elements of sustainability. Imagine trash turned into couture—it was awe-inspiring! We each shared our commitment to sustainability and climate action, adding a profound message to the visual spectacle.

Another highlight was co-presenting for the Caribbean region during a pitch presentation. Delegates were grouped by region to propose solutions to global problems, aiming for financial and technical support. Our project, 'AgriWave,' focused on sustainable agriculture in the region. With confidence and poise, I presented our project to development partners, securing the silver award and commitments from donors. Contributing to this project and passionately presenting it was immensely fulfilling.

We also worked on our commitments to sustainability, sharing our ideas with dignitaries. I had the honour of meeting Dr. Garry Conille, the Regional Director of UNICEF Latin America and the Caribbean and now Interim PM of Haiti. This was another valuable networking opportunity and a positive interaction, highlighting the dedication to youth and our voices.

The Summit was a perfect blend of work and fun. From tree planting and kayaking through the mangroves to swimming in the pool and bonding with new friends, it was a rewarding experience.

I am forever grateful to UNICEF, the Caribbean Development Bank, The Ashley Lashley Foundation, and all other stakeholders who made this possible. To the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, who welcomed me with such warmth—thank you.
