UNESCO and Norway to deepen collaboration on cultural heritage and sustainable tourism in Zanzibar

On October 4, 2024, UNESCO Representative to Tanzania Mr. Michel Toto, met with Her Excellency Tone Tinnes, Ambassador of Norway to Tanzania, to discuss preservation of cultural heritage of Stone Town, Zanzibar and the Creative City of Gastronomy initiative

Mr. Toto emphasized the importance and benefits of making Zanzibar a UNESCO Creative City together with Norway. 

I would like to express UNESCO’s willingness to collaborate with Norway and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, to nominate Zanzibar as a Creative City of Gastronomy

Mr. Toto also invited Norway to participate in the Donors' Roundtable to promote sustainable tourism in Zanzibar, scheduled in the second quarter of 2025. The Roundtable aims at mobilizing partners and resources for high-impact projects in Stone Town, Zanzibar, contributing to economic growth and encouraging local cultural activities .  

H. E. Tone Tinnes warmly welcomed UNESCO’s initiative to reinforce cooperation with Norway Embassy and expressed Norway’s commitment to work hand-in-hand with UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office, to promote Cultural heritage and sustainable development projects in Zanzibar.
