UNESCO Director-General deplores the death of journalist Makawi Mohamed Ahmed in Sudan

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has deplored the death of journalist Makawi Mohamed Ahmed in the village of Wad Al-Noura in Al Jazirah state, Sudan on 5 June.

I deplore the death of Makawi Mohamed Ahmed.  I call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Journalists and media workers are essential channels of information during a conflict and their safety must be ensured by all parties.

Makawi Mohamed Ahmed was a reporter for the state-owned Sudan News Agency (SUNA). He was reportedly killed with his brother by members of an armed group during a large-scale attack on the village of Wad Al-Noura, which reportedly killed 100 people. 

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
