G20 Brazil: UNESCO’s contribution to tackling inequality

The Group of Twenty (G20) is the main forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in defining and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic, political, and social issues.

What is UNESCO's role in the G20?

At the initiative of the Brazilian Presidency, and for the very first time, UNESCO is contributing to the work of the G20 as a privileged partner. To this end, and for the first time the Director-General has appointed a UNESCO's G20 Sherpa. 

The Director-General of UNESCO took part in the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, in Rio de Janeiro, where she presented the role of the Organization, as a privileged partner of this Forum.

Engagement groups

The engagement groups provide recommendations to the G20 leaders and contribute to the policy development process. UNESCO will take part in three of these groups to help move the debate forward.

As a privileged partner of the G20 Brazil, UNESCO is fully committed to supporting the Brazilian presidency in achieving its priorities in the lead up to the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2024.

UNESCO will actively contribute to two initiatives aimed at responding to today's most pressing challenges.
