G20 Brazil: UNESCO’s contribution to tackling inequality

The Group of Twenty (G20) is the main forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in defining and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic, political, and social issues.

What is UNESCO's role in the G20?

At the initiative of the Brazilian Presidency, and for the very first time, UNESCO is contributing to the work of the G20 as a privileged partner. To this end, and for the first time the Director-General has appointed a UNESCO's G20 Sherpa.

The Director-General of UNESCO took part in the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, in Rio de Janeiro, where she presented the role of the Organization, as a privileged partner of this Forum.

UNESCO's contribution to experts' discussions

The G20 provides a forum for discussion between experts from the various members and partners. These discussions focus on specific themes to respond to the most urgent challenges and Brazil’s G20 priorities.

UNESCO, as a key knowledge partner will participate in the following G20 Working groups, with a focus on Priority Africa and Gender Equality:

Education

Digital learning platforms including Education for sustainable development resources

Research and innovation

Inclusion, diversity and combating inequalities in science, technology and innovation

Culture

Cultural rights, digital environment, copyright, and illicit trafficking

Digital economy

Integrity of information and ethics of Artificial Intelligence

Women’s empowerment

Women in STEM; combating gender-based violence online; gender equity for Ocean

Environmental and climate sustainability

Marine spatial planning; and Indigenous and local knowledge in this area

Disaster risk reduction

Early warning systems, resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions

Employment

Combating inequality and discrimination

Anticorruption

Promote access to information for everyone, as well as integrity of information

Engagement groups

The engagement groups provide recommendations to the G20 leaders and contribute to the policy development process. UNESCO will take part in three of these groups to help move the debate forward.

As a privileged partner of the G20 Brazil, UNESCO is fully committed to supporting the Brazilian presidency in achieving its priorities in the lead up to the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2024.

UNESCO will actively contribute to two initiatives aimed at responding to today's most pressing challenges.

UNESCO supports through the School Meals Coalition and Gender Equality in education.

Global Mobilization against Climate change

UNESCO supports through its designated sites, the Greening Education partnership, and culture climate action.
