The MoW Programme

The Memory of the World Programme in Latin America and the Caribbean aims to:

Facilitate the preservation of the region's documentary heritage, particularly in areas affected by conflicts and/or natural disasters.
Enable universal access to documentary heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Enhance public awareness about the significance of documentary heritage among the wider public.

The MoW Regional Register

The Memory of the World register for Latin America and the Caribbean reflects the history and the evolution of a region with a great documentary richness of universal value. It includes more than 200 documents that remain guarded in archives, libraries or museums, and that have been recognized and selected by the MoWLAC Regional Committee to be part of the MoW regional register.

The Observatory is a virtual space where institutions safeguarding documents inscribed in the regional register, together with experts and policy makers, can share knowledge and information on documentary heritage preservation, protection and accessibility.

The Observatory includes a risk map that identifies the most important risks that documents are exposed to in the region, such as natural disasters, lack of preservation plans or weak risk mitigation response protocols . It includes an alert system that aims to mobilize attention and responses when documents face high levels of risk.
