Provenance priority: Ace Hotel Pittsburgh flies the flag for local design
A property wouldn’t truly qualify as an Ace Hotel if it didn’t brim over with the special one-off touches that the company has become known for. At its latest offshoot, which opened last month in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the hip group recruited a bevy of local producers to reinforce its American, craft-driven principles more than ever.
Ace Pittsburgh honours the city’s craft and artistic heritage by freely incorporating specially commissioned pieces around the hotel. In the rooms, a custom-designed luggage rack by local woodworker Bones and All serves as a constant presence. Made from responsibly sourced lumber from around the region, Bones and All has also crafted restaurant tabletops and communal tables in the gym that suit both board games and family-style dining.
Lighting fixtures have been produced with Portland’s Schoolhouse Electric. A mix of traditional and utilitarian styles, the nostalgic, tried and true designs serve as a perfect complement for Ace Pittsburgh’s century-old building. Beds are covered with specially designed Pendleton blankets that boast a motif inspired by Pennsylvanian quilts, as well as Pittsburgh’s sporting and design history.
Elsewhere around the hotel, guests will spot geometric stained glass panels by local artist Glenn Greene; quilted textile panels by Portland Garment Factory made out of vintage military ponchos; and custom cast iron doorknobs, drapery rods and shelving framework by Red Star Ironworks.
