Cast off: Wonmin Park debuts new resin furniture in Paris
Seoul-born, Paris-based designer Wonmin Park won our hearts back in 2012, when we first laid eyes on his ethereal 'Haze' resin furniture. Fast-forward three years and the latest editions from the same series are now the focus of his biggest solo show to date, at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris' Marais.
The new works, cast in a palette of grey, navy and white or red, yellow and green include a stool, table and an armchair, and were developed at the gallery's newly-opened 8,000 sq m research space in a former varnish factory in Roissy, Paris.
'I've tried to push the boundaries of my designs technically,' says Park of this latest offering. 'The change of scene and people around me has given me a new perspective. When people see these new pieces they will understand the technical challenges I overcame. I want my thought processes to be evident in the works.'
Cast in individual translucent slabs before being joined together, the muted colouration of the resin is achieved by mixing primary colour pigments in the moulds.
'Resin holds so many possibilities for me in terms of practicality, aesthetics and transparency,' explains Park. 'For me it's be the best material to encapsulate the feelings I want to convey.'
