The third outpost of Bocadillo de Jamón y Champán is a genuine surprise that proves that the copious Madrid cafés serving bocadillos - or a traditional Spanish sandwiches - could skip the rusty cliché to become a styled destination.
Housed in a late 19th century building in the hip Malasaña neighbourhood, it was conceived by local architects Lucas y Hernández Gil who created an aesthetic that, as they say, pretends to be simple and straight forward but at the same time sophisticated and elegant. A kind of ´minimal neomodernism’.
As such, original features are merged with contemporary ideas throughout: iron modernist-style columns have been painted a blue-grey colour, while original stone walls have been tempered with custom metal furniture in pastel pinks and inky blues. Meanwhile, a bar clad in cobalt blue bevelled tiles and burnished brass, lines the back wall.
The high stools and tables make for a casual and social atmosphere in which to sample the selection of delicious bocadillos. We recommend one filled with jamón de Bellotas (acorn fed ham) washed down with a sparkling glass of Veuve Clicquot, of course.
