Australian Open 2024 tennis preview
After two thrilling weeks of tennis at Melbourne Park at the elongated 2024 Australian Open, we've made it to finals weekend, and Jannick Sinner vs Daniil Medvedev.
The most dominant player Down Under this year has been the reigning women's champion Aryna Sabalenka, who tied up her second title in relative comfort on Saturday against China's Zheng Qinwen.
In the men's final, is of course Nova... wait! The ten-time champion and arguably greatest men's player of all time Novak Djokovic hasn't made it to Sunday's finale. 22-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner defeated the Serb in relative comfort on Friday, meaning that he gets to appear in his first Grand Slam final. His opponent, Daniil Medvedev, has been here twice before, both unsuccessfully, and will be desperate to add to his one major title so far.
Strangely, not a single top seed has made it to any of the finals this year. Men's doubles second seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aussie Matthew Ebden overcame unseeded Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on Saturday. While veteran Taiwanese doubles supremo Hsieh Su-wei is looking to claim her second doubles title of the week – she already lifted the mixed with Jan Zielinski, and on Sunday she and Elise Mertens will take on Jeļena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok in the women's.
