Azerbaijan Grand Prix: preview
For the fourth Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a row, Charles Leclerc will start from the front of the grid. Despite all of his successes in Qualifying, the Ferrari man has never won this race before, but with Max Verstappen starting from 6th and Lando Norris all the way back in 16th, he couldn't have dreamed of more favourable circumstances. The 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix starts at 12pm BST / 7am ET today.
Oscar Piastri, who this week was given team orders to yield to Norris, is also on the front row, with Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and George Russell completing the top five. Checo has been a disaster this season, to the extent that many viewers suspect 2024 could end up being his F1 hurrah, but when it comes to the Baku City Circuit, he's the gold standard.
He's won two of the last three Azerbaijan GPs, and considering Leclerc's record here he'll fancy his chances of bagging a first race victory since last year's race in Baku. However, things could get tasty if Verstappen manages to fight his way to the front of the grid. The out-of-form Dutchman hasn't won a race in nearly three months, while Perez harbours legitimate fears that he'll never have a shot a winning a race again.
