Doom achieves native 4K resolution on Xbox One X
Doom looks better than ever on Xbox One X.
On March 29, 2018, Xbox One X owners received the long-awaited 4K upgrade for Doom. According to Bethesda, the patch brought the resolution up to "4K on both Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro". However, an analysis from Digital Foundry reveals that this isn't the case. While the Xbox One X version achieves native 4K at times, it still uses dynamic scaling to maintain 60 FPS performance by lowering the resolution. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 Pro version only achieves 1440p resolution at its peak when dynamic scaling isn't involved.
The Xbox One X's image quality looks great on a 4K display due to the fact that it reaches native 4K. Upscaling the visuals from 1440p results in a significantly blurry experience so it's great to see the developer took the time to use the additional 1.8 teraflops for the Xbox One X version.
Doom was developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre. The game returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooting experience. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fluid movement provide the foundation for intense combat whether you're obliterating demonic hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign, or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes.
Doom is currently available for roughly $20 at various retailers. The game has been discounted for the Xbox Spring Sale.
