Today is World Teacher's Day. In South Africa, According to the Department of Basic Education, the wage bill now constitutes over 80% of education spending in several provinces, leaving very little for essential infrastructure, resources, and the recruitment of new teachers. Despite salary increases, the rising wage bill has not been matched by a corresponding increase in budget allocations. This means that while teachers are earning more, there are fewer funds available to hire additional teachers or maintain current staffing levels. What needs to change in the above scenario?
