🌍 Through Her Lens: The Story of Charmaine Chitate 📸 Charmaine Chitate is a trailblazing interdisciplinary artist with over fifteen years of experience in computer-based media, carving out a niche in photography and storytelling. Her work delves deep into the complexities of identity, capturing its many manifestations through her lens. In 2018, Charmaine was recognized as one of the Top 20 Contemporary African Artists by the FNB Joburg ArtFair, highlighting her potential to influence and inspire the global art scene. Her involvement with organizations like African Women in Photography (AwP), The Comms Avenue, and the Zimbabwe Association of Female Photographers (ZAFP) further amplifies her commitment to her craft and community. A Journey Inspired by Curiosity and Creativity Charmaine’s journey into photography was driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire to tell stories visually. From her early days asking, "What happened?" to taking a cinematography course organized by the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust, her path has been one of exploration and growth. Working with Shutterstock’s CreateFund diversity grant has allowed her to contribute content that authentically represents Africa, adding depth to her portfolio which spans sports, live events, family portraits, and more. Navigating Challenges with Resilience As a female photographer, Charmaine has faced challenges, especially in male-dominated spaces like sports photography. The scrutiny and patronizing inquiries from male colleagues are a testament to the gender biases that persist in the industry. However, she navigates these challenges with resilience, drawing strength from networks like AwP and ZAFP, where women photographers unite to share their experiences and find solutions together. Memorable Experiences that Inspire Change One story that left a lasting impact on Charmaine involved a teenage girl who made coffins to fund her education in a community where child marriages were prevalent. Using Photography as a Tool for Advocacy Charmaine’s approach to photography is deeply personal and collaborative. She focuses on identity, exploring how names, totems, and memories shape lives. By engaging in meaningful conversations with her subjects, she captures authentic emotions and stories that matter. Her work advocates for important causes by highlighting the untold stories that resonate and inspire action.
