The country's total January food inflation ticked up month-on-month (0.5%) and annually (2.0%) compared to January 2024. While meat prices continue to decline due to improved supply and recovery from disease outbreaks, higher fuel and electricity costs remain key drivers of broader price increases. As mixed summer weather patterns start impacting crops, we’ll gain a clearer picture of food inflation going forward, factoring in currency movements and global oil prices, says Kulani Siweya, Agri SA’s Chief Economist. #CPI #foodinflation #January #2025

"While overall employment in South Africa grew in Q4 2024, compared to the same time in the prior year, the agricultural sector saw a quarterly decline of 1.2%, a shift likely tied to the delayed onset of La Niña. On a yearly basis, employment in the sector inched up by just 0.4%, signaling no significant job creation over the year. The timing of the La Niña climatic event likely delayed planting activity, which typically drives labour demand. "As improved rains arrived later in the season, employment dynamics may have shifted to a later stage, rather than reflecting long-term sector stagnation," said Amy Barclay, Agri SA's head of labour. Is this a temporary lag, or a sign of deeper structural shifts in agriculture employment? #employment #agriculture #jobs

“South African agriculture reversed expectations: while the economy stagnated, the sector grew resilient. Exports surged, horticulture boomed, and farmers adapted to global markets. Yet, the dualism between commercial and emerging farmers remains unresolved.” 📈 Unpack the journey in BFAP’s 30-year review. January’s tractor sales kicked off on a positive note, but the industry remains braced for another challenging year. With summer crops still in critical growth stages and patchy conditions in some areas, farmers are holding off on major capital purchases until harvest clarity emerges. That said, the South African Agricultural Machinery Association (SAAMA) notes that cautious optimism lingers in the market. A return to ‘normal’ sales levels is evident, with 2025 tractor sales projected at 6,200 units, slightly down from 6,465 in 2024. Combine harvester sales are expected to range between 180 and 190 units, according to SAAMA. #farmers #harvest #SAAMA
