This week, we had the privilege of traveling to the incredibly beautiful Cederberg region in the Western Cape - home to the world’s finest rooibos - to chat to a group of local farmers. Every South African knows Ouma Rusks. But does everyone know how this iconic brand got its start? When the Great Depression hit the rural town of Molteno in 1939, the local dominee (minister) came up with a scheme to stimulate the economy. He offered the women in his congregation 30 British pennies to start a small business. Ouma Nannie was one of the women who took him up on his offer and started selling buttermilk rusks out of her kitchen. Her husband Thys and son Leon joined the business as popularity skyrocketed. Leon went on to found another legendary South African brand, Simba Chips, in 1956. Despite many challenges, the Ouma Rusk factory still stands in Molteno — employing nearly 300 people, supporting a community of over 10,000, and supplying millions of South Africans (and saffa shops abroad) with tasty rusks.
