The plan prioritizes strengthening infrastructure to withstand severe weather events like floods and droughts, which are increasingly affecting the region. Beyond physical resilience, the strategy highlights the importance of community engagement, improving early warning systems and integrating climate action into various sectors, including urban planning and agriculture. Through education and awareness campaigns, the province aims to empower residents with the knowledge and tools required to adapt to the changing climate. T The strategy also seeks partnerships with national and international organizations, both to secure necessary funding and to access technical expertise. This collaborative effort will ensure that KwaZulu-Natal implement its long-term sustainability goals. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐔 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐬 On July 18 2024, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) entered into force. Under this framework legislation manufacturers are required to disclose comprehensive environmental footprints on their products. The ESPR will also pave the way for more concrete and specific rules to be introduced on a product-by-product basis. To comply with the ESPR, manufacturers selling to the European market must collect data on the life cycles of their products and use this to monitor and report on the product’s environmental footprint. The legislation requires that the information be made freely and publicly available in the product’s digital passport. The ESPR also empowers the European Commission to introduce new product-specific rules to regulate further the sustainability of products sold in Europe. The first of these is expected to become mandatory as early as 2027. The ESPR presents a significant shift towards a more sustainable and circular economy, as well as a shift away from voluntary disclosures to compulsory ones. 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: 𝐃𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐥 South Africa's climate policy is currently being scrutinized for its effectiveness in addressing the climate crisis. The country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, based on 2010 levels, as part of its commitment to the ParisAgreement. However, recent evaluations suggest that the current targets may not adequately tackle the challenges posed by climate change. The 2020 update of South Africa's NDC includes both unconditional and conditional commitments, aiming for a reduction of 328 million tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030 under the unconditional target. The conditional target, which relies on international assistance, could facilitate additional emission reductions.  Furthermore, the NDC emphasizes the need for improved climate resilience and adaptation strategies, to protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems facing the impacts of climate change. As global temperatures rise, experts are calling for a thorough reassessment of these commitments to ensure alignment with more ambitious international climate goals. 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐎2 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 Norway is on the verge of launching the world’s first commercial CO2 storage service, known as the Northern Lights project. This collaboration between Total Energies, Shell, and Equinor marks a significant leap in offering carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a service for industries across Europe struggling with emission reductions. Initially, the project will have the capacity to store 1.5 million tons of CO2 annually. CO2 will be captured from hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, and chemicals, then transported to a storage terminal on Norway’s west coast, before being injected into deep geological formations beneath the North Sea.  The project’s potential extends may enable European industries to meet stricter climate regulations by utilizing this storage service.  Northern Lights sets a global precedent for reducing industrial emissions and is expected to pave the way for future advancements in CCS technology.  𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.  Read more on Phys.org and News24 https://https://lnkd.in/dk4_pwaK https://lnkd.in/gbjXMyks #ClimateAction #CCS #CarbonCapture #Sustainability #NetZero #Brundtland

The project will focus on regions like Ukraine, the Balkans, and Türkiye, which have close economic ties with the EU. With 60% of its €1.4 million budget funded by the EU, the project will develop reports offering policy recommendations for aligning these countries with the EU ETS, particularly as CBAM impacts carbon-intensive sectors such as electricity. With insights gathered from scenario modelling and stakeholder engagement, the Life Enspire project will provide crucial guidance in enhancing the region's sustainable economic growth and net-zero targets. 👉 Discover how this project aligns with the European Green Deal and what it means for global climate policy: https://lnkd.in/dqJ9iUvq 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝. 🌍✨ #NetZero #EUETS #CBAM #ClimatePolicy #Brundtland

Environmental groups, represented by Natural Justice, argue that the plant’s lifecycle emissions may rival coal and that the environmental impact assessments neglecting upstream emissions.  The case emerges as South Africa navigates a complex energy transition. Despite international support from the $8.5 billion Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), progress remains slow. The country’s new Climate Change Bill and external carbon pricing mechanisms like the EU’s CBAM are pushing for cleaner energy. However, the role of gas in the shift from coal to renewables remains highly debated.
