Climate change adaptation workshop at Samsen Farm (informal settlement), Umkomass, KZN South Coast. Climate change poses significant challenges to informal settlements which include: 1. Flooding: informal settlements are located in low-lying areas prone to flooding. 2. Heatwaves: Higher temperatures and heatwaves are dangerous particularly in informal settlements, where there is often limited access to cooling and Healthcare. 3. Water scarcity: changes in precipitation patterns can lead to water shortages, affecting the availability of clean drinking water. 4. Infrastructure damage: poor quality buildings make informal settlements highly susceptible to damage from extreme weather events. 5. Health Risks: increased temperatures and flooding can lead to spread of water borne diseases and other health issues. Resilience through knowledge: Empowering our communities against Climate change.

When the provision of basic services by Municipalities fails, communities come together, to think, come up with solutions, pull resources together and act. BESG is committed to support community action for visible and invisible change across KwaZulu Natal. This communal standpipe was erected by the community members (mostly made up of older women) of Shayamoya, within Msunduzi Municipality, after many months of them not having access to water as a result of broken water infrastructure in their area.
