Recently, #TeamCSIR was honoured to host Chery South Africa for a knowledge-sharing session on vehicle safety standards, benchmarking SA’s regulations against global best practices. There are significant gaps, but the country is headed in the right direction with the establishment of the CSIR Transport Safety Lab to drive research and innovation in this space. The engagement also provided a deeper understanding of Chery’s approach to safety, from crash mitigation systems to advanced driver assistance systems. Can we turn prawn shells into firefighter gear? #TeamCSIR wants to close the #recycling loop on chitinous waste by turning scraps from lobster, prawns and other shellfish into #ecofriendly products. Chitin can be isolated from seafood waste and chemically converted into chitosan, a polymer that could potentially be used to create fireproof fibres and plastics.
