Can we turn prawn shells into firefighter gear? #TeamCSIR wants to close the #recycling loop on chitinous waste by turning scraps from lobster, prawns and other shellfish into #ecofriendly products. Chitin can be isolated from seafood waste and chemically converted into chitosan, a polymer that could potentially be used to create fireproof fibres and plastics. Recently, #TeamCSIR and the Agence Française de Développement hosted a dissemination workshop to share the findings of a study on value chain analysis for the identification of opportunities in #solarPV and #batterystorage in South Africa.
