Transforming our understanding of Africa using Earth observations
About us
Digital Earth Africa (DE Africa) is an ambitious program taking Earth observation (EO) satellite imagery specific to Africa’s land and seas, and translating it into easy to consume information for anyone to use. DE Africa is freely available and once operational will provide a reliable platform capable of tracking changes across the African continent in unprecedented detail. The platform takes years’ of satellite data and translates it into decision-ready information that provides insights into a range of issues including flooding, droughts, soils, coastal erosion, agriculture, forests and land use and land change, water availability and quality and changes to human settlements. This information will tell a story over time to support decision-making by governments, private sector and civil society. Digital Earth Africa recently hosted ESRI during one of the weekly virtual training and knowledge-sharing sessions that Digital Earth Africa presents each week. ESRI provided a practical demonstration on the session on how to use Digital Earth Africa's tools - via the Africa GeoPortal - to help monitor floods. Watch the video and read the summary here: https://lnkd.in/d3T9bi33 ESRI used the session as an opportunity to demonstrate how participants can freely access DE Africa’s continental products and services such as Water Observations from Space (WOfS) and other data through the ESRI's Africa GeoPortal. This approach not only diversifies user interfaces but also strengthen synergies between ESRI and DE Africa and the shared goal of supporting action towards meeting towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through open access to Earth Observation data. DE Africa hosts weekly live sessions every Wednesday at 11am GMT zero. This same session will be held in French on the 30th October, and Arabic on the 31st October. To be part of the experience, please register at: https://ow.ly/MKpO50TUhlh These sessions are open to anyone to attend; from users and would-be users of Digital Earth Africa's platform and services, to policy- and decision-makers involved in the sustainable management of our continent's natural resources. Digital Earth Africa is seeking a service provider with expertise in Governing Board Recruitment and a strong African network. Currently hosted by RIIS - Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability until March 2026, DE Africa is preparing for a seamless transition to a Long-Term Host. As the current Governing Board's tenure concludes in November 2024, we are looking to appoint an Interim Advisory Board to provide strategic leadership, oversight, and accountability during this critical transition period. If your organization is passionate about driving impactful governance in Africa and has the necessary expertise, we invite you to review the project scope and requirements in our RFP document. Join us in shaping the future of DE Africa! Check out the full RFP details and help us ensure effective governance for our vital mission. We are pleased to announce that our Digital Earth Africa Lead Scientist, Dr Lisa-Maria Rebelo, and Earth observation data scientist, Mpho Sadiki, have been invited to take part in Sustainability Week Africa, a prestigious event hosted by Economist Impact. This year, Economist Impact brings its successful series of sustainability events to Africa to help it set the climate agenda. With a focus on business, the two-day in-person conference will convene pan-African and global leaders to focus on action. Dr Rebelo and Mpho Sadiki will be taking part in Thursday's session on AI for Good: how AI and ML can help accelerate the sustainability agenda. Lisa will provide a virtual presentation while Mpho will take part in a fireside chat along with Ashley Tan, the international head of sustainability and social impact at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The sessions will be moderated by Vijay Vaitheeswaran, global energy and climate innovation editor, The Economist. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 2024, 9.25am The Westin Hotel, Cape Town Register now: https://bit.ly/3W996wt We are immensely proud of the fact that Digital Earth Africa is being recognised as a key driver and support mechanism for climate action in the African continent. MAP SCIENTIFIC SERVICES is a groundbreaking example of translating scientific expertise into tangible solutions for environmental challenges. Founded in 2017 by Dr Pieter-Olivier, Andrew Purdon, and Michael Mole from the University of Pretoria, MAPSS has evolved into a thriving enterprise that bridges the gap between research and implementation. Their mission is to equip conservation organizations with geospatial tools and earth observation data to protect and manage vast landscapes, particularly in under-resourced areas such as national parks. MAPSS's synergistic partnership with Digital Earth Africa, and Esri, an international supplier of GIS software, strengthens their capabilities in geospatial solutions. This collaboration is evident in MAPSS's work, which showcases the power of combining scientific knowledge with practical implementation. Digital Earth Africa was referenced at the Cairo Water Week as an important tool to develop a strategy to conserve and manage Egypt's water resources. The platform was used to monitor the Egyptian coastline, and other models of crop yield, rainfall forecasting and the optimisation of the canal network were outlined by Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation The population increase has resulted in the per capita share of water declining from 2000 cubic metres a year in the 1960s, to below the water poverty line - less than 10000 cubic meters per year - in the 1990s, reaching about 500 cubic meters per year at present, which prompted Egypt to develop the National Water Resources Plan for the year 2037.
