About us
ECSSA has been established as a professional Society intended to represent the interests of the pre-hospital emergency care profession in South Africa. The organisation aims to support the growth and development of EM(R)S personnel from BLS level right through to ECP level. Although the organisation was founded in 2009, the current Board of Directors has recently embarked on an extensive strategic planning process to provide the Society with clearer purpose and definition. Those with an interest in the South African Emergency Medical Care and Rescue Environment are encouraged to follow our page and subscribe as members of the Society. Please follow us closely in 2014 to stay abreast with the exciting times that lie ahead for our glorious profession!

Another ECSSA conference comes to an end. So many insightful research projects, discussions, debates and knowledge-sharing. Thanks to my colleagues on the organising committee for putting on a fantastic conference. The future of prehospital care is bright if we can keep the momentum and operationalise the research into actionable results. My own little contribution was an oral presentation and co-author on a poster and two oral presentations. Thanks to the co-authors for all their hard work. Teamwork makes the dream work. #ecssa

Day one done and dusted. Very insightful experience, left with so much to think about and consider. I can say with more of these , this industry stands a chance of experiencing some very huge improvements. My highlight of today is the presentation about “Students experiences of debriefing stressful clinical cases during learning shifts”. This is because I relate so much also as a practitioner you always feel the need to have a discussion with someone about your case and what happened. I remember I even went to length of discussing this with a doctor immediately after that call and had discussions with all the ALS when I do handover😹. I felt a lot of emotional stress and had a lot of questions. I still ask myself how I would be feeling if they said something negative about the case😩 luckily for me they shared the same sentiments and treatment route as me. Now imagine if you don’t have that support system or find that your fellow colleagues are just not interested 😓it’s possible to suffer mentally and emotionally from such. I am a huge believer in debriefing 🤞🏼 it does make a difference and I value the critisism (constructive), I believe it helps me grow as a professional and builds my character. On other news the question and comment one of the practitioners made about responding to Mental health patient is a topic that I for a longtime have realised that our crews don’t and aren’t familiar with especially their rights and regulations that govern us as EMS providers. As a healthcare provider working in the public sector, I hope as we progress we will educate our fellow colleagues and receiving hospitals on how important it is to facilitate the whole engagement of stroke patients. There’s still someone who doesn’t know that stroke patients have to be transported to identified stroke facilities and the need to have them prioritised and the need for a a scan as quick and so on. Our relationship within the health care environment has to be better🤞🏼 if not for our health but for our patients. Paramedics , Doctors and nurses need to work together 🤞🏼 And most important, communications is important please I hope our dispatchers one day understand the importance of asking them to pre notify 🙏 I can go on and on 😹😹on a lighter note I was so excited to see Lucas Device for the first time in action Thank you for the opportunity let’s go rest for Day 2. #ecssa
