Making Financial Markets Work for the Poor
About us
FinMark Trust, a non-profit independent Trust based in Johannesburg South Africa, was established in March 2002 and is funded primarily by UKaid from the Department for International Development (DFID) through its Southern Africa office. FinMark Trust's purpose is ‘Making financial markets work for the poor, by promoting financial inclusion and regional financial integration'. It does this by conducting research to identify the systemic constraints that prevent financial markets from reaching out to these consumers and by advocating for change on the basis of research findings. Thus, FinMark Trust plays a catalytic role, driven by its purpose to start processes of change that ultimately lead to the development of inclusive financial systems that can benefit all consumers. FinMark Trust organises its activities under focus areas. These have changed over time in response to opportunities in different sectors. Managing this structure flexibly has been an important reason why the trust has had impact: an independent impact assessment of FinMark Trust highlighted its ability to respond flexibly and opportunistically to circumstances, generally building on the momentum it perceives in specific market areas.

Inclusion is not only about having access – it’s about ensuring everyone is truly served. Data gives a voice to those who are often left behind and enables smarter solutions that empower communities. Our CEO, Brendan Pearce attended the 2024 AFI Global Policy Forum, where he shared his insights on the importance of data for financial inclusion in an interview. Why is #data so critical for financial inclusion? We posed this question to Brendan Pearce, Chief Executive Officer of FinMark Trust. 📊 “Data gives a voice to consumers living in poverty, enabling us to bring that voice directly into policymaking,” explained Pearce. He also explored why we have to move beyond thinking about #financialinclusion purely in terms of access. ➡For more insights, read the full interview here: 🔗 https://bit.ly/4eLImKJ #LeaveNoOneBehind #FinancialServices

Day 2 of the #2024SADCFI Forum is well underway. There has been significant progress in the SADC region with #financialinclusion increasing from 57% in 2011 to 77% in 2023. The question is: How are real people in this figure affected, in terms of their livelihoods and sustainability? What are we missing as far as the informal market is concerned? We need to drive inclusivity through real market interventions to achieve real impact to ensure access translates to sustainable livelihoods. More can be achieved through collaborative and coordinated efforts by SADC stakeholders.

Informative sessions, robust discussions, and focused commitment marked Day 1 of the #2024SADCFI Forum. Work is underway, and what we realise from convenings like today's Forum is that the commitment to advancing financial inclusion through digitisation is both real and achievable through effective collaboration and communication with stakeholders and industry partners.
