Joretta's story touched the hearts of everyone at CommonSpirit Health's #humankindness gala last year, helping to raise +$2.5M for their relentless work around #behavioralhealth initiatives. CommonSpirit Health addresses the stigma related to mental health, depression and addiction, it provides improved access to mental health professionals for people who are in crisis, and proactively screens people to support them before a crisis develops. Earlier this year, we produced the story of Oscar Loyola, a young man who went from feeling trapped to feeling like he has a “limitless future”, thanks to the amazing support of 10,000 Degrees. His story helped to raise over $1.1M at their One Amazing Community Gala, which will go towards continuing to achieve educational equity across the Bay Area. Our negative assumptions about people with Down syndrome can lead us to treat them in such a way that these assumptions become reality. In sociology, this is called a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’. 8 years ago today, I started building and leading the work at The Oakland REACH. I can’t say that I’m surprised at how far we’ve come and how much we’ve accomplished in those 8 years — I started this work with the determination to make a difference and I knew I wasn’t going to quit until we did. But I’m grateful for the extraordinary team at REACH, our families, and all the support and partnership we’ve received from so many of you over the years. 8 years later, I wake up every morning still fired up to make the lives of children and families better. That’s my mission. That’s REACH’s mission. Dr. Ruth Gottesman, the 93-year-old widow of a Wall Street financier, has donated $1 billion to Bronx medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with instructions that the donation will be used to cover tuition for all students going forward. Dr. Gottesman is a former professor at the school. The donation is not only the largest one ever given to the school, but also important because it is going to a medical school in the Bronx, NYC’s poorest borough. The moment the students realize their tuition is paid for is everything 🥺
