📍News from our health practice New Insights on Mobility & HIV/TB Treatment in South Africa Nearly a quarter of people living with HIV and TB in 🇿🇦 struggle to stay on treatment because of access related challenges. Our latest study, funded by the Gates Foundation, explores the scale of mobility and its effect on treatment adherence. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we combined qualitative insights from key informant interviews with quantitative ecological analysis to estimate mobility patterns and understand why mobile individuals struggle to stay in care. Our findings highlight the urgent need for flexible treatment access, digital health records, and tailored interventions to improve outcomes. "Africa must reduce dependence on foreign aid and transition towards self-sufficient health financing." – Dr. Michel Hamala Sidibé. "Donor funding is substantial in Africa, but in many countries, domestic health spending is less than 50%, with OOP expenses sometimes exceeding 70%." – Prof. John Ele-Ojo Ataguba [Executive Director of AfHEA]. "The PHC strengthening conversations need to start from within. What can we do based on what we have? Can we be more efficient in tax administration—this time, prioritizing health?" – Prof. Justice Nouvingnon At #AfHEA2025, key discussions on sustainable health financing, domestic resource mobilization, and strengthening PHC highlight the urgent need for Africa to take charge of its health systems. Given the dynamic landscape of global public health and the increasing constraints on developmental funding, a strategic shift towards asset-based public health management is essential. The MMC SUSTAIN program exemplifies this transition, demonstrating a model for enhancing the domestic sustainability of VMMC programs in South Africa
📍News from our Health practice The devastating USAID funding freeze has led to questions around the future of health programmes in developing countries. At Genesis, we collaborate with our partners to create resilient health systems for improved population health. So, what do we mean by sustainability in this context? “It’s the long-term capacity of a country to deliver high-quality essential services and enhance population health outcomes amidst an evolving public health burden and external shocks,” says Adjoa K., a principal in our health practice. Here’s a first-hand account of how our team supported SA’s Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Programme to transition toward sustainability. #GenesisAnalytics #Sustainability #VMMC #USAID
