We work to shape a future worth living around the world.

About us

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working with South Africa since 1995. The country office in Pretoria opened in 1996. Our work in South Africa is carried out primarily on behalf of the German Development Ministry (BMZ). The core areas of cooperation are: • Peaceful and inclusive societies • Sustainable economic development, training and employment • Climate and energy, just transition In order to develop inclusive societies, GIZ supports the fight against corruption. To this end, it strengthens state anti-corruption agencies and promotes partnerships between the public and private sectors and civil society. GIZ works to make South Africa safer by supporting measures to prevent violence, with a focus on gender-based violence. In terms of sustainable economic development, GIZ helps improve both the quality of TVET and the range of services in this area. It uses courses and internships to support labour market-oriented training and employment. GIZ is working on a socially just energy transition to create an economy that is environmentally friendly and a society that is climate resilient. To achieve this, it is actively involved in developing an environmentally sustainable and secure energy infrastructure and in enhancing energy efficiency. This is cutting emissions and creating new jobs, such as in the hydrogen sector. Similarly, GIZ supports the country in further developing and implementing its national climate policy so as to be able to meet its contributions under the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, as part of a European Union initiative we work to increase production of vaccines and other health products in Africa itself. It also supports the ongoing vaccination campaign against COVID-19 in South Africa. Our work in Lesotho focuses on participation in democratic processes by improving civic education, prevention of violence against women and children and integrated catchement management through regional approaches.

From September 2-6, State Secretary Morgan (Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany) will visit South Africa to assess climate policy, the energy transition, and related structural changes in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and rural areas. She will also discuss the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the South African government. The JETP aims to provide comprehensive support to South Africa in its transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Central to the partnership are the gradual phase-out of coal and the expansion of solar and wind power installations. This also involves necessary investments in infrastructure, such as electricity transmission lines, particularly in the coal regions of the country. Morgan intends to deepen international climate cooperation with South Africa through her visit, exploring the opportunities and challenges the country faces in transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable practices.   On September 4, Morgan visited the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa NPC in Benoni, focusing on the skills required for the just energy transition. This was followed by a tour of the decommissioned Komati coal-fired power plant in the Mpumalanga province, which is considered a pilot project for the successful reuse of coal infrastructure. The visit concluded at the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency in Emalahleni, which supports the diversification of economic sectors in Mpumalanga. The German delegation was accompanied by GIZ & KFW representatives from the climate, skills, and energy clusters, who presented Germany’s various support contributions within the framework of the JETP. Special attention was given to creating new job opportunities and ensuring social justice during the transition process. A key success factor is the adaptation of vocational training to meet the demands of the new energy market and to provide affected workers with new opportunities in the renewable energy sector, which is supported by the skills cluster. The energy cluster supports the South African JETP in creating favourable conditions for renewable energy, particularly through technical and regulatory support for the ongoing electricity sector reform and the development of a green hydrogen economy. #JustEnergyTransition #JETP #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #SouthAfricaGermany #EnergyTransition #GreenHydrogen #CoalPhaseOut #SolarPower #WindEnergy #CleanEnergy #VocationalTraining #ClimateJustice #InfrastructureInvestment #GreenEconomy #SustainableJobs ·      SAGEN Website: www.sagen.org.za ·      SAGEN4 Project Page: https://lnkd.in/d-2EDW29 ·      CET2 Project Page: https://lnkd.in/dmmNEZWe   ·      CSP4 Project Page: https://lnkd.in/edy2r8i7 ·      JUST SA Project Page: https://lnkd.in/dSQ4n55t ·      CPD4E Project Page: https://lnkd.in/dt3vq9qB 📷 ©GIZ/Slebz Collen

  •   Be part of the workshop series and discuss the draft South African Wholesale Electricity Market Code!   🔌South Africa’s electricity sector is undergoing fundamental changes, including the the restructuring of its electricity utility Eskom into separate entities for generation, transmission, and distribution, promoting decentralised electricity generation and a competitive market. The development of the Market Code is a crucial aspect of the new electricity supply industry in South Africa. It creates and supports the trading and settlement rules and procedures for the purchase and sale of electricity by traders, retailers and participating generators. Modifications to the Market Code follow a transparent governance process, allowing participants and stakeholders to propose changes. In light of these developments, the NECOM Secretariat in conjunction with the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) invites interested stakeholders to a workshop series to discuss the draft South African Wholesale Electricity Market Code. 📅 September Event 📅 10 September: Ancillary Services and Reserve Markets RSVP: Market Code Detailed Workshop 9: Ancillary Services – NTCSA https://lnkd.in/dFS7Tmy7 __________________________________________________________________________   The South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN) supports this workshop series and a wide array of South African stakeholders in grappling with the critical questions of the power sector reform in the country.
