As climate impacts on water resources intensify, the need for a unified approach in Southern Africa is more crucial than ever. The SADC Regional Climate Resilient Water Investment Programme (SADC-AIP) is bringing countries together to develop a transformative funding proposal for climate resilience in water management, with consultation workshops held Yesterday in Eswatini and Zimbabwe, following similar sessions in Lesotho and Zambia last week. Similar workshops are planned in nine more SADC Member States. Once finalized, the proposal will be submitted to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Eswatini’s Ms. Duduzile Nhlengethwa-Masina, Director of Meteorology at the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, emphasized the value of this collaboration: “The regional approach for this project is important for our country given our reliance on shared water resources. This collaboration will greatly improve water resource management and strengthen Eswatini’s climate resilience.” This ambitious programme seeks to leverage at least USD 117 million and will benefit 140 million people across the SADC region, driving resilience and sustainability. “This programme will lay a solid foundation for climate resilience and serve as a model for collaborative water governance. It is through the cooperation of our member states, the commitment of our stakeholders, and the resilience of our communities that we will build a future that is both secure and sustainable for all,” explained Charles Chibidika, Technical Advisor-Monitoring and Data Management for Transboundary Water Resources Management at the SADC Secretariat. The SADC Secretariat is leading the implementation of the programme, and working with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) as the GCF Accredited Entity and Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), host of the Continental Africa Water Investment Programme - AIP (AIP) Secretariat, as the Delivery Partner.
