Digital Transformation in cities and towns around the world has risked creating more problems than solutions. In the quest to digitally engage citizens, residents, and businesses, government entities often create a complex web of technologies, solutions, and processes that confuse and often alienate the very constituents whose lives the governments seek to enrich.   In late September, Smart Cities Council Global Thought Leader John Brooks (CEO, Americas, Globetom) co-presented with Philip Stander (Group CEO, Globetom) at the TM Forum Innovate Americas conference in Dallas, Texas. The topic focused on the use of Open Digital Assets, developed within the TM Forum, in multi-industry use cases. John Brooks presented a recent case study where a smaller Colorado city has employed City as a Platform technology to simplify and greatly improve the experience of their citizens while interacting with their city. Smart City Expo in NYC last week - a good event with plenty of new entrant and growing technologies to understand. Thank you, SCC, for the invite! The net take-aways: 1. The ability for jurisdictions to digitally evolve their operations and their interactions with constituents and other partners is growing faster than most realize. 2. The amount of data-driven tech arriving in the form of various IOT devices is showing no signs of slowing, but actually accelerating. 3. The jurisdictions I've spoken with (from several countries, not just in North America), are still not fully prepared for the collection, storage, sharing, and analytics generation that will follow this trend. It was good to hear perspectives from friends from Ukraine, Poland, Canada, Australia, and several other countries. The Smart evolution is present in every country; the question boils down to rate of adoption. And I had a chance to meet Spot (pictured below). Spot goes where humans can't safely go. Equipped with several arrays of sensors, Spot is part of the robotics generation that also leverage AI to work autonomously.
