Transforming the built environment for people and planet to thrive.
About us
The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) is an independent, non-profit organisation, established in September 2007 to promote green building in South Africa’s commercial property industry. A green building is a building which is energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible- which incorporates design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce or eliminate its negative impact on the environment and its occupants. Building green is an opportunity to use resources efficiently and address climate change while creating healthier and more productive environments for people to live and work in. The GBCSA is a full member of the World GBC (www.worldgbc.org). GBCSA Vision: To lead the transformation of the South African property industry to ensure that all buildings are designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way to allow South Africans to work and live in healthy, efficient and productive environments. GBCSA Mission: To promote, encourage and facilitate green building in the South African property and construction industry through market-based solutions. The main functions of the GBCSA are to: 1. Promote and raise awareness of green building, 2. Establish a green building rating system for South Africa, 3. Provide green building education, and 4. Make knowledge and resources available to assist those that want to implement green building.

This is what it looks like to be part of a diverse and active network that is together working towards big, shared goals. This is how we shape a more sustainable future for our built environment. Last week our very own Bakang Moeng represented GBCSA at the Future Cities-Africa Green Building Summit 2024 Summit. (This forms part of the World GBC Africa Regional Network activities.) Thank you to all our collaborating GBCs: Green Building Council Nigeria, Green Building Council Uganda (GBCUG), Botswana Green Building Council, Kenya Green Building Society, Green Building Council of Zimbabwe, Green Building Council of Mauritius (GBCM) & Tanzania Green Building Council. #AfricaRegionalNetwork #climateaction

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Future Cities-Africa Green Building Summit 2024 hosted by Green Building Council Nigeria in Lagos. What an experience! The Summit hosted some of Africa's brilliant minds committed to tackling the issue of rapid urbanization within the African context. They discussed how we can ensure the creation of sustainable and inclusive urban spaces and the various financial mechanisms that can be leveraged to create these spaces. I also got the chance to share my thoughts on Creating Resilient & Inclusive Urban Spaces in the Heart of Africa through a panel discussion alongside panelists Thandi Katlholo Judy Zakreski 赵笛 Karim SELOUANE, PhD Taibat Lawanson, moderated by the dynamic Tebogo 'Tebby' Modisagape. The highlight for me was the Youth Empowerment Exchange (YEE) presentations that showcased just how bright Africa’s future is 😊! Thanks to Maama Adeshina, Prince Emmanuel Audu MGBCN, Dr. Sanmi Olowosile, and others for curating such a wonderful program for the youth and the mentors who guided the participants along this journey. To the ARN members that I got to meet in person for the first time our Chairperson Nasra Nanda, TRUDY MUWANGA, Tebogo 'Tebby' Modisagape, NWANCHA Roger TIKUM, Tony Lee Luen Len, Kudzi Chitiva and @Bahati Zongo your energy and passion are contagious, keep blazing the trail for green buildings in your respective countries! A big thank you also to ZELDA KERUBO and Oloo Adhiambo from the World Green Building Council. Most importantly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Danjuma Waniko president of the GBCN his team Jacqueline (Osademey) Aki, ONABEKUN ADEKUNLE, Arc. Emmanuel FALUDE, Omoyemi Olayiwola and Dr. MKO Balogun, for organizing an amazing summit and letting us experience firsthand; the bustling, delightful unparalleled chaos that is Lagos! I loved every moment of it!

GBCSA is proud to be part of developing the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment. The Manifesto champions the needs of rapidly growing cities on the continent. Find out more about it in the link below. #BuildingTheTransition #FutureCitiesAfrica #ClimateAction
🌍 By 2050 Africa will be home to 1.1 billion more people than it is today. That’s nearly 75% of the world’s projected population growth of 1.5 billion more people. This means a huge demand for buildings, with 80% of those that will exist in 2050 yet to be built. We must act now. Our network of African Green Building Councils (GBCs) developed the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment. The Manifesto champions the needs of rapidly growing cities on the continent. Read more about the Africa Manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/eUYUDeJu During the course of this week in Lagos, Nigeria, our Africa GBCs and other #builtenvironment stakeholders are convening for the 2024 Future Cities — Africa Green Building Summit. This event will engage stakeholders across the African continent. We’re #BuildingTheTransition. Are you ready? #AGBSummit2024 #FutureCitiesAfrica #SustainableConstruction #FutureCitiesSummit2024
