Meet the Teams for the Trainer's Hackathon! Introducing Nina Hernitschek, the team leader representing Chile! Nina is an assistant professor in astronomy (specializing in astroinformatics) at the Universidad de Antofagasta's CITEVA. With a rich background in astronomy and data science, Nina is eager to lead her team toward hackathon success. Formerly a DSI/VIDA Postdoctoral Fellow, Nina has vast teaching experience in data science at both the Universidad de Antofagasta and the La Serena Data Science School. As a member of the LSST Collaboration, she’s passionate about connecting students with the cutting-edge intersection of astronomy and data science. Joining her are Jeremy Tregloan-Reed, an assistant professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the Universidad de Atacama who specializes in data science methods like Bayesian Analysis, and Eduardo Unda-Sanzana, associate professor of astronomy and director of CITEVA, whose experience in management and event organization will be crucial for the success of their regional hackathon. Together, they aim to inspire students—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—to explore the interdisciplinary connections between astronomy, computer science, and data science. With their regional hackathon in Antofagasta, they seek to spark interest in data-science-driven research and bridge the gap between diverse career paths. Stay tuned for more introductions! #Hackathons #DataScience #DSTH2024 #DSRH2025

As we embark on our new journey with the Data Science Hackathons, we proudly honour Prof. Carolina Odman the visionary founder of Hack4Dev 🌎 ✨ Her passion for using science to drive global development laid the foundation for this incredible initiative. Prof. Odman-Govender saw the power of hackathons to foster collaboration, spark innovation, and create meaningful change. Her leadership, kindness, and unwavering positivity continue to inspire us all. As we carry Hack4Dev forward, we remain guided by the values she instilled—community, impact, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. In this special video: https://lnkd.in/dWS_QD2D, Prof. Odman shares her remarkable journey—from a Swiss-trained engineer to becoming a trailblazing astrophysicist in South Africa. She reflects on her love for science, her commitment to uplifting communities, and how she maintained her positivity throughout her battle with cancer. #Hack4dev, #Hackathons, #DataScience, #DSTH2024, #DSRH2025 African Astronomical Society IAU Office of Astronomy for Development IDIA - Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy South African Astronomical Observatory Department of Science and Innovation DARA - Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy

Transforming Hackathons for Global Development 🌍✨ Too often, when people think of “hackathons,” they imagine unauthorized data access or intense coding competitions. But at Hack4dev, we see hackathons differently—as powerful tools for positive development. At Hack4dev, when we talk about hacking, we mean the “Good kind of hacking,” as Prof. Carolina Odman, our founder, puts it. This means using hackathons to drive development and community growth, not just for coding and competitions. 🚀💡 Hackathons originally started in 1999 to fix software bugs and later evolved into large-scale competitive events. Today, though, advancements aren’t limited to software. We’re in the midst of the 4th industrial revolution, impacting every aspect of life. Unfortunately, formal education has struggled to keep up with these rapid changes. Terms like Education 4.0 highlight the new skills needed, but formal education systems are slow to adopt these modern tools. Hackathons, by design, adapt quickly to technological needs. Imagine if we applied this adaptability to education. Hackathons could complement formal education, bridging the gap between taught skills and those needed in society, and accelerating evaluation on new interventions. This vision defines Hack4dev: “Utilizing informal education methods, such as hackathons, to accelerate both skills development and data insights.” 🎓🔍 Hack4dev is a global project with a strong African leadership team, focused on empowering communities worldwide. 🌐 Our latest initiative, the “DATA SCIENCE TRAINERS HACKATHON 2024,” will train data science experts to lead their own hackathons in various regions. 📊💻 And this is just the beginning. We plan to develop more hackathon programs to address diverse in-demand skills, from AI tools for teachers to telescope assembly for astronomers. 🔭🤖 If you have ideas to share, join us. The Hack4dev team is always open to innovative solutions for global challenges. 🤝💡
