In Legal Brief’s 5986 Issue features “Equality: Surnames ruling a leap forward for gender rights” an article by Lara Horne and Kaamilah Paulse. In the age that we live in it’s hard to believe that, until last month, a husband in SA wasn’t allowed to choose to use his wife’s surname or even combine their surnames. Today, we shine light on mental health and the fact that it is okay to not be okay. As we bring awareness to the importance of remembering that your mental health is just as important as your physical health, let’s take this moment to check in with ourselves on what healthy mechanisms we can foster to help cope with stress – both personally and professionally – and what healthier boundaries can look like. By offering your support to those around you, we can foster a community of understanding, compassion, and resilience. #HeroldGieAttorneys #HeroldGie #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealth #LawFirm #CapeTownLawFirm #LegalAdviceWhenItMatters

A Bizcommunity.com publication of “Declaring insolvency - legitimate or elaborate ruse to avoid paying child support?” an article by Kaamilah Paulse. One of the greatest obstacles in the way of divorce is fear that a former spouse could be so devious and obstructionist as to cause financial ruin to the rest of the family. The woman involved in an ongoing case in the Cape Town High Court seems to be having just this experience. But in the latest round of court hearings, the presiding judge, Derek Wille, has acted to maintain the right, and the duty, of a presiding officer in a case where the interests of children are concerned, to make orders and ask questions beyond the usual. Herold Gie Attorneys reposted this
Alisa Malindi completed her Bachelor of Social Science in Gender Studies and Law at the University of Cape Town in 2019, before pursuing her Bachelor of Laws (LLB), which she obtained in 2021. Throughout her academic journey, she demonstrated her commitment to both the legal field and social justice issues. During her time at university, Alisa volunteered at the University of Cape Town Refugee Law Clinic, where she worked closely with licensed attorneys, assisting in interviews with asylum seekers and refugees. Her role contributed to important human rights efforts. Additionally, she volunteered with SHAWCO Law, teaching grade 8 and 9 students in Manenberg and Khayelitsha about their rights, further highlighting her passion for legal education and community empowerment. In 2021, she gained valuable experience during a vacation work programme at Herold Gie Attorneys, which paved the way for her legal career. She joined the firm as a Candidate Attorney in January 2022, and after two years of dedicated service, she was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, marking the culmination of her seven-year legal journey. Now practicing as an associate in the firm’s Bellville office, Alisa continues to grow her legal expertise. She is currently preparing for her conveyancing examinations as she builds on her promising career at Herold Gie Attorneys. “The centenary of women being allowed to practice law is of particular importance to me as a black female attorney. To see women be at the forefront of transformation and landmark cases when 100 years ago, we did not even have one foot in the door, is remarkable. It is also encouraging to see so many young women express interest in a legal career and who go on to fulfil those dreams in university and beyond. When I look at women like Desiree Finca, the first black female woman to be admitted as a legal practitioner in South Africa, I am reminded of how far we have come as a profession.” #100more #CountMeIn #WomenInLaw
