From different parts of South Africa, philanthropists, heads of foundations and leaders of non-profit organizations gathered at the APF Regional Convening in Cape Town themed ‘Women, Society and Wealth’ to identify areas of synergy and opportunities to advance the cause of women in the society and achieve SDGs 5. Ms Petronella Maramba, Board Member of Delta Philanthropies who opened the event, illustrated the value that empowering women have on families and economies drawing from her lived experience. Leila Davids, Strategic Philanthropy Advisor, Gates Foundation moderated the panel session which drew from the expertise of the panelists to provide insights on complex issues such as gender based violence, institutional barriers to women’s ability to access economic opportunities and entry points for philanthropic actors to change the narrative. The panelists included: Clara Kwizera; Philanthropy Specialist, Nedbank Private Wealth, South Africa, Lusako Munyenyembe; Program Officer, Citizen Engagement and Government, Ford Foundation, Southern Africa, Bongiwe Ndondo; CEO, Hlanganisa Community Fund.

This powerhouse non-profit is on a mission to strengthen democracy and constitutionalism at the grassroots level by offering crucial legal advice to citizens and the migrant community. Through engaging workshops, MLAO is empowering local communities to know their rights—from the district to the national level! But that’s not all—MLAO is also leading the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) through their Sisterhoods Advocates SEF project. By creating employment opportunities for women as community-based paralegals, they are not only addressing GBV but also empowering women to take charge of their lives and futures. Our Hlanganisa team embarked on an Women’s month roadshow across four provinces, where we had the privilege of visiting our incredible partner organizations and spending quality time in their vibrant communities. We divided our team in four groups , we participated in initiatives handpicked by our partners, "Bua Mosadi" community dialogue in the Free State, the "Women Empowerment to Reduce Gender-Based Violence" event in KwaZulu-Natal, the empowering "women empowerment and gender equality" event in Gauteng, and lastly an awareness campaign in Limpopo, Ga-Mmatlala focused on combating gender-based violence and supporting the local LGBTQIA+ community. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent learning, sharing, and growing together.
