Solar power companies are growing fast in Africa, where 600 million still lack electricity Central and West Africa have some of the world’s lowest electrification rates. In West Africa, where 220 million people live without power, this is as low as 8%, according to the World Bank. Many rely on expensive kerosene and other fuels that fill homes and businesses with fumes and risk causing fires. Last week I had the opportunity to moderate a discussion on "the role of infrastructure in making the AfCFTA a reality" at the 2024 Infrastructure Africa Conference in Cape Town (Infrastructure Africa). We had a great panel including business leaders (Markus Thill), public officials (Yunus Hoosen), and the Angolan Ambassador to S. Africa and Lesotho (H.E. Rui Orlando Xavier). Our discussion reflected on the negative impact of Africa's infrastructure gap on trade to the extent that intra-African trade becomes much more expensive than trade with Europe or Asia. The need for a good infrastructure and industrialization strategy was pointed out, and the role of initiatives such as PIDA was emphasized. The importance of innovative infrastructure financing including blended financing was also discussed as a means for de-risking and promoting infrastructure investment on the continent. As Africa strives to attain its #SDG goals, the role of the #AfCFTA can not be overstated and with that, the need to close the region's infrastructure gap should be highlighted. I'm grateful to Infrastructure Africa for the opportunity to engage in these discussions.

A wonderful opportunity to have shared the stage with Ebrahim Takolia, Cosmas Chiteme, Thomas Frohn, Mashudu Ramano and Jabri Ibrahim to discuss the increasingly important topic of "The emerging hydrogen economy" at the Infrastructure Africa Conference last week 💡 I am grateful to have been able to provide a perspective on the topic based on my experience at Hydrogen Energy Applications and to have learnt from the insights shared by fellow panelists. I was initially quite apprehensive, but pushed myself out of my comfort zone and I'm glad that I did because it's safe to say that my debut as a panelist was an enriching and enjoyable experience, leaving me looking forward to more in the future! 🌟

Better Late than Never It was an honour moderating an African Union Development Agency-NEPAD sponsored session on Cross-border infrastructure development in Africa during the Infrastructure Africa event, which happened in Cape Town, South Africa, from 16-17 July 2024. The panel drew insight from the following experts: Towela Jere, Zwelibanzi Sapula M. Inst. D, Hasnayn Ebrahim and Simba Chitapi as speakers. They discussed and shared the challenges faced and also provided some opportunities for advancing cross-border infrastructure projects. Some key takeaways from the discussion were as follows: · For cross-border infrastructure to be sustained, there should be constant collaboration, commitment and engagement from countries or parties involved in the project. · Regulations and policies must be harmonised and domesticated to align with national strategies. · All the sectors (Transport, Energy, ICT and Water) are essential. They must receive equal investments and interest from the private sector to promote the corridor approach in cross-border infrastructure development. · There are other significant roles pertinent roles international partners can take up aside from financial support. Moderating the session provided insight for advancing the conversation and promoting the cooperation of all stakeholders to drive cross-border infrastructure development in Africa. I am very optimistic about the future of infrastructure development on the continent. We stand together to build a connected and prosperous Africa. #InfrastructureDevelopment #Africa #CrossBorderProjects #Sustainability #PublicPrivatePartnerships #CapacityBuilding #PolicyHarmonization #FutureOfAfrica
