Thousands of long-established South African nonprofit organisations, which have registered under the Nonprofit Act as “NPOs”, are being encouraged to ensure legal compliance with that Act, as the Department of Social Development (DSD) begins a process from the end of October to update its records. Organisations with NPO status that remain non-compliant may face deregistration from the NPO register. "We at Inyathelo urge all nonprofits to act swiftly to ensure compliance with the NPO Act, to safeguard their operations and the communities they serve,” says Inyathelo acting executive director and chairperson of the NPO Working Group, Feryal Domingo. “Check the DSD website list for pending deregistrations and take immediate action if your organisation is listed. Nonprofit organisation "Chilla no Jamza" hosted a breast cancer awareness event to educate people about cancer and support those that have been diagnosed with cancer. The organisation’s founder Johannes Mabena said the purpose of the event was to make people aware of the disease that affects a lot of people. “It is important to know about breast cancer, it has killed a lot of African people due to lack of knowledge and ignorance. We plan to make the community aware of the disease through educational tips and advice,” he said. He further mentioned that many people who are diagnosed with the disease suffer in silence due to not receiving support and encouragement. Leadership and governance are inextricably linked, says Dr Jane V Usher, MBA Programme Coordinator at Boston City Campus. “Strategic leadership is made up of individuals who have a commitment to ethical and responsible behaviour, who are authentic and transparent and who see themselves as stewards who practise servant leadership and who are the epitome of Ubuntu leadership. The question they have to ask themselves is whether they have the grit and resilience to make it a practice to always do right and not what is easy,” she said. Dr Usher was addressing delegates at the recent 3rd Higher Education Conference Plenary Session that focused on Higher Education leadership and management HELM. South Africa’s food security has plummeted to its lowest levels in over a decade, as outlined in the South African Food Security Index 2024 compiled by economists at the University of Stellenbosch. Disparities in food security manifest starkly across different demographics and regions. Findings reveal that one in four of the poorest households reported that children in their homes went hungry last year. Every year the Children’s Institute at the University of Cape Town publishes the South African Child Gauge to track progress for South Africa’s children. The lack of progress from 2016 to 2022 makes for sobering reading: - Stunting rates have remained stubbornly high, with 29% of children under five stunted or short for age; and - At the same time we have seen a dramatic increase in overweight and obesity in children under five – from 13% in 2016 to 23% in 2022 – which is more than four times the global average. This double burden of malnutrition matters because it compromises children’s long-term health, education and economic prospects. Read more in the Daily Maverick:
