DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD? Counter-offers have become increasingly prevalent, especially in today's competitive job market, where up to 50% of candidates may receive a counter-offer upon resigning. A counter-offer can be tempting, often including salary increases or promotions, making them seem like a validation of an employee's worth. However, it's essential to consider the long-term ramifications. Research indicates that up to 80% of employees who accept counter-offers leave their company within 6 months and 90% within a year! This statistic highlights that while a counter-offer may provide immediate gratification, it often fails to address the underlying issues that prompted the job search in the first place. ➡ Employer Perspectives From an employer's standpoint, counter-offers can be a double-edged sword. While they may temporarily retain talent, hiring managers often view them negatively. According to a study by the Society for Human Resource Management, 45% of hiring managers perceive counter-offers as a sign of disloyalty. This perception can hinder an employee's future career advancement within the organization. ➡ Strategies for Candidates If you find yourself facing a counter-offer, reflect on your reasons for leaving: Revisit why you began your job search. Are those reasons likely to change if you accept the counter-offer? Evaluate the offer holistically: Look beyond salary; consider work culture, career advancement opportunities and overall job satisfaction. Negotiate Wisely: If you decide to negotiate, come prepared with market research and clear non-negotiables. *** Watch this space for a very exciting upcoming #webinar on this very topic of #salarynegotiation! *** #AmazingWorkplaces #HiringGreatLeaders #ExecutiveSearchFirm #Leadership

⛔ There are times in business when ‘NO’ ultimately means ‘YES’. More times than one might imagine, in fact. Particularly when it comes to hiring people who don’t tick all the boxes on the job spec. The job spec itself requires a case study all on its own. But, to summarise, these documents are frequently outdated, are often formulated without taking account of the vision and direction of where the organisation or business unit is heading NOW and, therefore, cannot always be relied on as an accurate benchmark for selecting talented leaders. Which is what happened when we introduced a top notch Marketing Director to a multinational FMCG company, who had been looking to fill this role for months. ‘We’re just not finding great people’, we had been told. So we did our thing, found a great person, and introduced him to the hiring team. ‘No’, they said. ‘He’s overqualified and earning too much’, we were told. Fortunately, the Jack Hammer consultant was not particularly good at doing as she was told. And so she pushed harder to have the hiring team meet with the Marketing Director. She knew he was top quality, and she was convinced that once they met with him, they’d know it too. And, she was right. The interview took place. Then another, and another. (And a whole lot more – the interview process took seven months to conclude, and took place in several countries all over the world). The Marketing Director was eventually appointed. One year later, he was promoted to Managing Director SA. No need to elaborate on the moral of this particular story. #AmazingWorkplaces #HiringGreatLeaders #ExecutiveSearch #CaseStudy

A generalist these days is more than the proverbial “Jack-of-all-trades”, but in fact it equates to being a master of your area of expertise, while also having a deep understanding of and handle on the interrelated disciplines which impact on the success of a business. In a recent article published by Bizmag, Advaita Naidoo, Africa MD at Jack Hammer Global, explains why developing commercial acumen, staying informed about global trends and learning adjacent skills can set you apart in your career. “Examples abound of the different ways in which cross-functional competence manifests, the value it brings to a company and, by extension, the desirability of these professionals to the company.” From problem-solving and resourcefulness to relationship-building and strategic thinking, becoming a generalist is key to staying competitive. And the best part? It doesn’t require another degree - just a commitment to learning beyond your role. We've been revisiting our 2024 goals and looking at where we could make a few "tweaks" Are you and you team feeling the "crunch?" #Leadership #Q4Crunch #FinishStrong #SmartGoals

We cannot continue to avoid conversations in the workplace about peri-menopause and menopause. How can it be OK for executive women to NOT feel safe about speaking up about their symptoms without jeopardizing their careers 😮 It's time to create amazing workplaces for EVERYONE. Thank you Kacy Fleming, M.A. for leading the charge! #AmazingWorkplaces #Leadership #Menopause #MentalHealthMonth

If you'd have told me 10 years ago, I would speak publicly about my perimenopause & the suicidal ideation that resulted, I would have laughed. I was too busy showing everyone 'the me' I thought they wanted to see. The professional, get sh*t done, sleep when they are dead side. Thankfully perimenopause showed me the error of my previous ways, but it nearly took 'the real me' out in the process. We talk about hot flashes, night sweats, and irritability. Like midlife women are the butt of some cosmic patriarchal joke about crones and loss of vibrance and attractiveness. What we don't talk enough about is the often catastrophic wreckage "the transition" leaves in its wake. During the menopausal years: ▶️ Women initiate 60-80% of divorces in midlife ▶️ 30-40% of women consider leaving their jobs due to menopausal symptoms and roughly 15% do ▶️ Women aged 45-54 have the highest rates of suicide among adult women ▶️  20-30% of women experience clinically significant depressive symptoms during this time What will help midlife women through this transition: ✅ Widespread education ✅ Awareness at home and in the workplace ✅ Flexibility in the workplace without formal accomodation ✅ Compassionate leadership ✅ Community Do not expect executive women to come out and talk about their symptoms openly. In the current corporate climate, it is not safe for us to speak up without jeopardizing the careers and credibility we worked so hard to build. Instead, corporations and allies need to do the work to understand the nuances and complexity of navigating the menopausal transition at work and at home. Post-menopause women have incredible growth in their ability to lead: ✅ Studies suggest a 15-20% increase in emotional intelligence scores for post-menopausal women ✅ Post-menopausal women report a 25-30% increase in their ability to handle stress ✅ Post-menopausal women show a 15% improvement in decision-making skills, particularly in complex scenarios ✅ There's a 15% increase in innovative thinking among post-menopausal women in leadership roles For businesses, the payoff for supporting midlife women is HUGE. Invest in women's health, educate your people, create a compassionate environment for all workers. #menopauseawarenessmonth #supportmidlifewomen #workplacewellbeing #menopausematters
