  • 🌍🌿 #WorldHabitatDay Did you know that rangelands account for approximately 80% of South Africa and around 45% of the entire African continent? These vast landscapes are not just crucial for climate stabilisation; they also play a vital role in supporting livelihoods. Recognising their value and investing in sustainable management practices is important for both ecological health and community resilience. By protecting and rehabilitating these areas, we can enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and ensure that local communities thrive. On this day, let’s come together to promote sustainable rangeland practices that safeguard our environment and empower future generations. #Habitat #rangelands #conservation

Each year, from mid-September to early December, a select group of communal farmers in the Eastern Cape gathers their sheep to be sheared!🐑 These farmers, who are part of grazing associations and signatories of conservation agreements, are committed to implementing regenerative agricultural practices across the region's rangelands. This includes resting demarcated areas during the growing season and keeping their sheep in areas marked only for grazing. With support of the Regenerative Fund for Nature, they receive shearing equipment, training, and direct access to the wool market. This improves their market access and enhances their livelihood opportunities, all while promoting sustainable farming.

In the semi-arid shrublands of Namaqualand, herding and raising small livestock has been the way of life for thousands of years. However — now faced with extreme effects of a changing climate — the livelihoods of many are in jeopardy.     With climatic changes here to stay, locals are drawing from their knowledge and expertise to adapt to protect their rich biodiversity and livelihoods. With support from Conservation South Africa, communities are hard at work to improve their resilience to climate change by restoring, managing and protecting semi-arid rangelands. As Women's Month comes to an end in South Africa, we continue to honour the significant contributions women make to our communities and the world. We encourage you to listen to these powerful stories from community climate champions, who share their unique perspectives on how climate change is impacting their lives and communities, and how they are adapting to these challenges.

For many in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, making a living is not easy. Water scarcity and degraded rangelands have plagued large swaths of the country, leaving herders and pastoralists struggling to keep their cattle healthy. The changing landscape, meanwhile, has also enabled invasive species such as the wattle tree to move in.     Conservation South Africa, a local affiliate of Conservation International has been working with local communities to restore degraded grasslands. At the heart of this effort is a remarkable group of women, known as the Women’s Climate Group, who have risen as the true champions of their community.    Once excluded from decision-making, these women are now at the forefront, determined to make a significant impact and address gender disparities in conservation. Driven by a passion to share their unique perspectives, they are paving the way for a more inclusive and engaged community.     Listen to their stories here: https://lnkd.in/djYKVS7m
