POV: The CEO of Gucci, the Environmental CEO of LMVH (Louis Vuitton, Moët, and Hennessy), world-renowned ethical fashion supporter Hanneli Rupert, and Dr Patrice Motsepe all spoke at the first Condé Nast International Luxury Conference to be held in Africa, in 2019… And up on stage with them was a textiles designer from Port Elizabeth… The youngest person on the panel. This is the story of Laduma Ngxokolo. Laduma’s mother taught him to crochet beadwork and knit before she passed away when he was in Grade 8. Making scarves and selling them at school became his way of contributing to the child-headed home, helping his siblings to cover their living and schooling costs. Even so, he kept the extent of his talents and output a secret from his school-mates, only announcing his intention to pursue a higher education in Textile Design and Technology after he finished school. Fast-forward 15 years, and there’s no secret about it: Laduma’s brand MAXHOSA AFRICA is entrenched on runways and in the collections of fashionistas the world over. The brand’s design ethic stems from rich Xhosa beadwork traditions and was inspired, in part, by Laduma’s own cultural initiation ceremony in 2007. His work fuses symbolism and tradition with precision craftsmanship and technology, resulting in vibrant, wearable, high-end men’s fashion and lifestyle products that transcend time and trends. And still, he is adamant that MAXHOSA AFRICA must remain accessible to the local mass market, despite its luxe label, global outlets, and worldwide recognition and adulation. So, Laduma, this is my humble #2020FORALL shout-out to you. For taking the best of time-honoured Xhosa heritage and artisanship to the world stage while ensuring that it is also accessible to us here at home… Thank you.

Did you know… Women are the proud owners of 1 in every 3 cars bought this year. And, while staying safe on the road is something we should all be aware of, we especially warn female drivers to be cautious. Here are some safety tips for female motorists to keep in mind: Stay vigilant Driving at night and navigating through less-safe areas both demand extra caution. It’s better to stick to busy, well-lit routes if possible. Avoid distractions like dialling and texting, adjusting the stereo, and eating. Always stay focused on the road. And of course, keep your windows up and doors locked, and stash your valuables in the boot. Check your car’s condition Prevention is better than cure when it comes to car maintenance. Regularly check that your tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth (and don’t overlook the spare tyre, which could be a lifeline in an emergency). Pro tip: The recommended tyre pressure is generally printed on a sticker on the inside well of the driver’s door, and you can see it when this door is open. Keep an eye on your car’s oil, coolant and brake fluid levels, and check your windscreen wipers as well. A quick stop at your nearest garage can help you stay on top of these basic, but important, checks. Be prepared You never know when you might have an emergency, and having the right tools and supplies in your car can make all the difference… Things like battery jumper cables, a wheel jack, a spare tyre, a reflective warning triangle, a small medical emergency kit, and drinking water. And of course, a USB charger is a must-have to ensure that your phone is always powered up. You should also check with your car insurer about any roadside, emergency and medical assist services available to you. Remember, road safety is a shared responsibility. By staying vigilant, maintaining your car, and being prepared for emergencies, you not only protect yourself but also contribute to safer roads for everyone. My colleague, Sakina Ntuli, chatted to Spice4life about this. Check out the article using this link: https://lnkd.in/dPcRhyJR
