Events🕖 At MMA, we want to highlight critical issues relating to pressing challenges and opportunities around the media, information integrity, journalism, and democracy. Given the context of G20 being hosted by South Africa this year, we want to host a series of events culminating to a Media20 later on in the year. Each event will have a different focus area but all will seek to advance and develop core principles and issues that can be taken further by G20. Each event will have a positive focus on seeking to find solutions and build consensus on addressing core challenges. Each event will also seek to raise common ground across the various issues, including the theme of climate change and the G20 theme of ‘Equality, Sustainability, and Solidarity’. Keep an eye on our socials for more information regarding each event❗

About us
Media Monitoring Africa’s vision is a responsible, quality media that enables an engaged and informed citizenry in Africa and across the world. MMA aims to contribute to this vision by being a leading media watchdog in Africa to promote a free, fair, ethical and critical media culture. The three key areas MMA seeks to address through a human rights-based approach are media freedom, media ethics and media quality. Established in 1993 to monitor South Africa’s first democratic elections, MMA has over 25 years experience in media monitoring and direct engagement with media, civil society organisations and citizens. MMA is the only independent organisation in Southern Africa that analyses and engages with media according to this framework.

MADOAT: EXPLAINED🗞️ At the heart of a democratic society is the recognition that children have the right to participate in matters that affect them, including how they are represented in the media. The MADOAT initiative is committed to ensuring that young voices are heard, valued, and actively engaged in shaping media narratives. The project seeks to give real meaning to children’s right to participation by creating spaces where they can freely express their views and contribute to discussions that impact them. It works to amplify their voices in the media, ensuring that their stories, perspectives, and lived experiences are accurately represented rather than sidelined or misinterpreted. A key focus is equipping children with knowledge about their human rights and the role of media in shaping societal narratives. Through critical media literacy training, children develop the ability to analyze content, question biases, and understand how narratives are constructed. Children’s participation in media monitoring is a crucial component of the project. Their insights and analyses are integrated into broader monitoring efforts, ensuring that the media industry is held accountable for how it portrays young people. Findings from their monitoring work are presented to journalists and media professionals, encouraging ethical and responsible reporting. Above all, it ensures that they are not passive consumers but active participants in shaping narratives that affect their lives. Through this initiative, children’s voices become a driving force for change, pushing for a media landscape that is inclusive, ethical, and representative of their realities. #MadoatMondays Read more: https://bit.ly/3XWhDFy

[RECAP]: Global Digital Justice Forum 🌍💻🗞️ On the 10th and 11th of February we attended the IT For Change and Association for Progressive Communications, in collaboration with the Global Digital Justice Forum, Building a Civil Society Digital Justice Strategy conference which aimed to craft a civil society response to current happenings globally. With the rise of tech-oligarchies and mis- and dis-information, the threat to democracy and human rights is more serious now than ever. At MMA, we have always maintained that the media and digital platforms should be used for public good and uphold human rights and diginity. Incidents of censorship and internet shutdowns are now becoming more common, perpetuating a worrying descent into fascism in many countries. We will continue to advocate for human rights and democracy through the media and digital platforms, ensuring that information integrity is upheld. ✊
