🌍 Today in Utano Newsletter: Why do so many people stop taking their antiretroviral medications and what can we do about it? Despite treatment programmes being very successful, too many people still progress to advanced HIV because of disengagements from antiretroviral (ARV) care. ❓So why do people stop taking their HIV treatment and what we can do about it? Graeme Meintjes and his colleagues recommend differentiated care which in essence - is treating people differently according to their needs. 💡They advocate that we create more optimized differentiated services to improve quality of care by addressing key issues that causes people to disengage from treatment in the first place. For instance, giving people longer refills of up to six months with yearly clinical reviews for individuals who are clinically well and are suppressing their viral load well to reduce the need for more frequent clinic visits and providing flexibility so that people can pick up their medication elsewhere in cases of unexpected travel. 🌍 What’s the leading cause of death in South Africa? That depends on who you ask. According to health minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, HIV/AIDS is the biggest killer in our country but Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) lists a number of other diseases. The South African Medical Research Council ( SAMRC) agrees with Motsoaledi: HIV is the leading cause of death in South Africa. According to the SAMRC, there is extensive misclassification in Statistics South Africa mortality reporting, which renders their data unsuitable for health resource allocation decisions. 🔗 Know more: https://lnkd.in/eHZFNCrr #africa #medicines #vaccines #diagnostics #medicaldevices #health #healthcare #publichealth #pandemic #arvs #qualitymedicines #safemedicines #substandardmedicines #counterfeitedmedicines #diabetes #insulin #ncds #medicinesforafrica #southafrica #zimbabwe #Rwanda #leniashwenda

🌐 How can we make sure that more medicines are safer for children? There is a dearth of pediatric labeling information which poses two dichotomous risks for children: ➡ That they won’t get medications that might help them, or ➡ that they’ll suffer side effects from medicines prescribed by their doctors but are authorized only for adults. 1️⃣ Build on adult trials that establish the effectiveness of certain medications, then move on to study the safety and correct doses for children. Big efficacy trials to show that a medication already works may not be necessary because in cases where if the disease and the expected drug effect are similar in adults and children efficacy could be extrapolated from adult trials to pediatrics. 2️⃣ More adult trials could make efforts to include adolescents either from the start or soon thereafter, as was done with some COVID-19 vaccine trials, based on evidence that older adolescents often react to drugs in ways similar to adults. 🔗 Know more: https://lnkd.in/eeRqKf-T #africa #medicines #vaccines #diagnostics #medicaldevices #health #healthcare #publichealth #pandemic #arvs #qualitymedicines #safemedicines #substandardmedicines #counterfeitedmedicines #diabetes #insulin #ncds #medicinesforafrica #southafrica #zimbabwe #Rwanda #leniashwenda

🌍 🦠More than 430 people have died from cholera in the past month, Sudan's health ministry says, as civil war continues to ravage the country. The number of infections has risen to about 14,000. Cholera is a fast developing and highly contagious disease. It can cause diarrhoea, dehydration and death, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). It is relatively easy to cure, but rapid treatment is essential. Getting treatment to those affected areas is hugely complicated by the conflict which has killed up to 150,000 people since it began last year. We need a resolution to the conflict to help to improve the situation and to effectively protect the health of the Sudanese population. 🔗Know more: https://lnkd.in/ediQY27j #africa #medicines #vaccines #diagnostics #medicaldevices #health #healthcare #publichealth #pandemic #arvs #qualitymedicines #safemedicines #substandardmedicines #counterfeitedmedicines #diabetes #insulin #ncds #medicinesforafrica #southafrica #zimbabwe #Rwanda #leniashwenda
