The day of Anjara’s birth was full of joy but she was also born with a bilateral cleft lip, and her parents couldn’t afford the surgery to repair it. When Justinah was about 6 months old, her mother Vitasoa brought her to a local hospital for a cleft lip. But nothing could be done as the surgery was too costly. A month after receiving his free operation, Mamadou and his mother came back to the ship for celebration of sight; a ceremony for patients that have received successful eye surgeries. His sight has greatly improved, he's better at identifying objects, and he’s returning to school when next session resumes. “Mamadou can do work for me now. He can move around without jumping his steps or falling,” said his mother.
