#MiningInnovation Murray & Roberts Cementation successfully completed a project to sink multiple shafts through very poor ground conditions to a depth of 280 m. This challenging environment which included water-bearing ground material, with nearby villages relying on the same aquifer, required careful mitigation of social and environmental impacts. Traditional techniques such as cementation injection or chemical grouting were unsuitable due to the risk of groundwater contamination. Instead, Murray & Roberts Cementation employed a modern version of the caisson method, using a road-header that sinks under its own weight. A steel wedge is driven down beneath the weight of a concrete lining, applied from the surface, to prevent any risk of water contamination. The team operates in a flooded environment, advancing until reaching competent ground, at which point the shaft can be dewatered. #MiningInnovation At Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef project near Mokopane in South Africa’s Limpopo province, Murray & Roberts Cementation successfully utilised directional drilling technology to guide #raiseboring equipment, meeting the project's exacting requirements. This approach enabled the completion of a 5.1 m ventilation shaft to a depth of 950 m below surface, precisely intersecting with an existing underground excavation.
