I am proud to have won the advanced track of the InstaDeep hackathon at the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa last month! The hackathon focused on predicting locust breeding grounds using multispectral satellite images. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to MWR CyberSec for sponsoring my attendance at the conference, which enabled me to participate in insightful talks on the intersection of Machine Learning, AI, and Cybersecurity, as well as other exciting discussions and use cases within the industry. Terribly Layered Security - The common security failings of cryptography implementations for mobile by Connor du Plooy & Andre Lopes. This talk will delve into the intricate world of transport security, specifically within mobile applications, highlighting the terrifying vulnerabilities that can be introduced into your applications unknowingly. We will explore how these security flaws can be exploited by threat actors, compromising data integrity and user privacy. The presentation will cover critical aspects such as host name validation, certificate chain validation and certificate/public key pinning.

We are also thrilled that some of our talented MWR CyberSec team members had the opportunity to present their knowledge and expertise through various talks and workshops: 🔹 Jonathon Everatt and Robin Roodt, our skilled cyber security consultants, led a workshop titled "RCE in Web Applications; Harder than you may think" on Friday. They delved deep into the complexities of Remote Code Execution (RCE) in web applications, offering valuable insights. 🔹 Connor du Plooy, our principal consultant, and Andre Lopes, another of our dedicated cyber security consultants, presented an eye-opening talk, "Terribly Layered Security - The common security failings of cryptography implementations for mobile." They highlighted the often-overlooked vulnerabilities in transport security within mobile applications, underscoring the critical need for robust security measures. 🔹 Robin Roodt also delivered an engaging talk, "Hacking The Airwaves!" He explored the fascinating realm of hacking wireless communication, with a focus on the automotive industry, access control, and IoT communications. His presentation offered a glimpse into the attack vectors that could allow unauthorized access to vehicles and sensitive areas.
