#NAACAMProud: NAACAM member, MALBEN ENGINEERING LIMITED, a B-BBEE level 4 supplier of stampings and welding components, has become the first South African automotive component manufacturer to trial green, low-carbon steel. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable manufacturing in the automotive industry. At a recent handover event in Nigel, Operational Director Luca Smargiasso, emphasised how adopting green steel will revolutionise the automotive and steel sectors, paving the way for a decarbonised future. The green steel coil, produced by Germany's Salzgitter AG, showcases a commitment to environmental solutions that align with global sustainability goals. "Maben Engineering's strong partnership with Allied Steelrode and Salzgitter AG has been key in this journey. Together, we've worked tirelessly to ensure the successful import and processing of this innovative material—the first of its kind in Africa," Luca said. The reduction in emissions from using green steel is sizeable. Salzgitter AG agent Shane Barnard of United Steel indicated that 2.2 to 2.4 tonnes of CO2 is emitted for every tonne of grey steel produced—meanwhile, green steel production results in only 0.48 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Luca further noted, "Malben Engineering isn't just committed to leading in technology; we're also dedicated to environmental stewardship. Recently scoring 98% in a Responsible Supply Chain Initiative audit, we're setting new standards for sustainability in the automotive component manufacturing sector." "This is no longer just a moral or environmental choice but a strategic business decision. International regulations are pushing all manufacturers to pursue environmental sustainability actively," added Allied Steelrode Chief Marketing Officer Lee-Ann Geyser. Commending Malben Engineering, Renai Moothilal, CEO of NAACAM, commented, "NAACAM is proud of our association with Malben Engineering. Decarbonisation and sustainability are becoming increasingly important elements in OEM sourcing and localisation decisions. Malben Engineering's proactiveness as early adopters of sustainable practices will ensure that they are well positioned when these decisions are made." About us
NAACAM is the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers. NAACAM is recognised as the voice of the South African automotive component industry both domestically and internationally. As a member driven organisation we are at the forefront of industry leadership, representation and stakeholder engagement for automotive component manufacturers. Anchoring our membership base are suppliers to OEMs for assembly in SA as well as to OE export markets and the domestic and global aftermarket. These manufacturers are supported by a band of associate members who provide specialised services across a diverse range including financial services, logistics, IT, incentive consulting and a host of others. The majority of component suppliers to OEMs are globally owned however there is a significant emphasis of increasing the number of home grown participants in this space. To that extent, NAACAM devotes much resources towards positively impacting the localisation, transformation and supplier development environment in SA. Today, NAACAM, in partnership with Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies, hosted a fully subscribed breakfast seminar for members and key stakeholders. Professor Kriengkrai Techakanont from Thammasat University delivered the keynote address, after which he was joined in a vibrant panel discussion led by Professor Justin Barnes of TWIMS and including Renai Moothilal, NAACAM CEO and Andrew Kirby, CEO of Toyota SA. Professor Techakanont’s highlighted how Thailand’s automotive sector, which was comparable in size to SA’s in 1999, has grown to produce three times more vehicles than South Africa, employ over 400,000 people and be rapidly transitioning into NEV production. Key to this success was the flexible yet consistent policies prioritising consumer demand linked production and component localisation. For example, NEV-specific tax incentives and consumer subsidies are premised on the committed condition of local production of vehicles. The panel highlighted opportunities for South Africa to apply similar strategies to grow local production and support the transition to NEVs. Moothilal emphasized that South African suppliers are ready to transition to NEV production, with the opportunity now lying in working with local OEMs to prioritise the localisation of components for the different types of NEVs. Kirby stressed the importance of strategic industrial policy that promotes domestic sales and simultaneously incentivises OEMs to localise specific components. This would address declining localisation levels and the growing market penetration of imported vehicles which is leading to the deindustrialisation of the SA automotive sector. To achieve this, Professor Barnes indicated that a policy development process is needed that fosters collaboration, with all stakeholders fully embedded in the outcomes of this process. The informative event gave attendees different perspectives on how the component sector could be supported to enable growth in localisation and add to its value proposition and competitiveness in supporting the domestic OEMs and unlocking greater economic development benefits. #DrivingLocalisation #DrivingTheNEVTransition Ugo Frigerio Thamsanqa Arthur Mtombeni Andrea Moz Billy Tom Peter van Binsbergen Nduduzo Chala (Cert.Dir.)(MBA)

Beth Dealtry, Head: Policy & Regulatory Affairs at NAACAM, said an increase in local production of automotive components is needed to foster sustainable economic growth. She noted that SA needs to double its production volumes and get to producing 1.4-million vehicles annually by 2035 in line with SAAM. This growth in vehicle production would necessarily improve component production volumes, and thus bolster scale economies and ultimately, SA’s global price competitiveness. Reflecting on the NEV transition, Beth added that, while many local companies are producing components to support domestic OEMs, about one-third are producing components that are primarily exported to the EU and UK. Over half of the value of direct component exports are ICE-specific components. Supporting the diversification of SA’s export basket and the pivot into producing NEV components is essential to sustain long-term component exports. “Investment incentives, such as the recently announced Automotive Investment Scheme 35% cash grant for qualifying NEV component investments, will support local companies’ transitioning into producing NEV components. For those that supply local OEMs, the key enabler of the NEV transition are commitments from OEMs to produce the vehicles locally. This demand certainty will enable the components sector to make the necessary investments to support NEV platforms,” she said.
