"We need to do better for humanity today and for the future, learning from the experiences of the anti-apartheid effort" – Nelson Muffuh, United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Africa 🇿🇦 at the Our Shared Humanity exhibition launch by the Nelson Mandela Foundation with #NalediPandor et al. The exhibition on the work of the UN Special Committee against #Apartheid reminds us that justice knows no borders, and inaction enables injustice. We now have an opportunity to commit to a world where humanity drives every action. #OurSharedHumanity #OurCommonFuture

Last year, the #NelsonMandelaFoundation seconded three social workers to assist the Gauteng Department of Education with processing early childhood development (ECD) service registration applications in the province. Since June 2023, the team has processed 896 registrations, reaching 64 047 children across Gauteng. Here are some reflections from the registration support team on their work: – “It has not been easy, but it is incredibly fulfilling to see the outcomes for children through the registration process.” – Busi Maimane – “What drives me each day is knowing that children are receiving quality education in their critical early childhood development years.” – Keketso Nkoane

Next year will be three decades since the inception of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and only a handful of the apartheid-era TRC cases have been investigated and come before the courts. A six-part TV documentary series directed by Enver Samuel called Truth Be Told puts South Africa's TRC and post-TRC processes under the microscope. These stories open a window into the lives of the forgotten family members by highlighting their lived experiences and the deep intergenerational trauma caused by apartheid-era atrocities. The families of Topsy Madaka, Bheki Mlangeni and Phila Portia Ndwandwe are among those whose stories will be told in the series. The series will be broadcast on SABC 2 every Sunday at 9.30pm, from 3 November. #NelsonMandelaFoundation

“I am a human being and nothing human is alien to me.” Dr Sebabatso Manoeli-Lesame, executive director of the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity, used this quote by the African-Roman playwright Terence to lead the panel discussion at the final instalment of our Critical Dialogues series, “Where Do Africans Belong?”. The discussion was a precursor to the 22nd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, which Abdulrazak Gurnah, the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, delivered in September. “The wisdom of that quote is, of course, so much of our discourse and conversation around immigration, the refugee experience, otherness and belonging,” said Dr Manoeli-Lesame. “It centres on calling people who come from different lands aliens. And Terence reminds us that no one human is alien.” Watch the full dialogue discussion here: https://brnw.ch/21wNZui #CriticalDialogues #Dialogue
