Transforming Africa through #Agenda2063

About us

At the June 2018 AU Assembly a decision was taken to transform the NEPAD Planning and Coordination Agency into the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD). The establishment of AUDA-NEPAD is part of the global reforms geared at improving the Union’s impact and operational efficiency. In response to Africa’s emerging needs, AUDA-NEPAD’s strategic priorities for 2022 fall under the following three signature solutions: 1) Health – Focus is on building capacity in the pharmaceutical and manufacturing sector and improving access to essential health care services; 2) Economic growth and job creation through interventions aimed at enhancing infrastructure development, trade and markets and productivity-enhancing innovations, and 3) Food systems, aimed at increasing agricultural and food productivity to ensure food and nutrition security.

  • Addressing the skills gap and mismatch for Africa’s youth necessitates robust partnerships on Labour Migration aimed at enhancing Africa’s economic potential further underscoring the intersection between education, mobility and economic development. On the 14th of August 2024, the ILO, AUDA-NEPAD and GIZ, hosted a high-level webinar on "Skills Partnership for Labor Migration in Africa". The webinar set out to provide a platform and dialogue on topical issues around the current labour migration trends in Africa, some policy recommendations to enhance labour mobility and fostering strategic partnerships between African countries and international stakeholders. The webinar featured a panel discussion with expert panelists providing policy, industry, and international perspectives, addressing key topics on labour migration and skills partnerships. The expert speakers emphasized the following points: • 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The development of skills partnerships must include private sector institutions. • 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Investment in skills training and development should be shared by both the country of origin and the country of destination. • 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲: Skills partnerships for labour migration should recognize Africa not only as a sender of skills but also as a receiver. • 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: Emphasis should be placed on establishing global skills partnerships between countries of origin and destination to maximize and promote legal migration pathways, benefiting both countries and migrants. • 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Africa’s economic integration and development, as embedded in the AfCFTA, is crucial for effective and sustainable skills development and for driving global skills partnerships for labour migration. • 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿: While Africa prides itself on providing human labour, it faces the risk of not providing quality training to ensure its labour force meets current market demands. • 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Recognizing skills is vital for demand-driven skills partnership mobility. • 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Institutions like the IOE already offer employment and skills development opportunities for persons with disabilities, but more deliberate efforts are needed to mainstream social inclusivity.
