  • We're proud to announce our 'A' Rating for a 13th consecutive year! Our Managing Director, Kalim Rajab, emphasised the significance of this achievement in light of the current industry and economic climate: "At NNAC, we take our role as an absorber of societal risk seriously. The decisions we make and the planning we do are necessarily long-term in nature – which is why I'm so proud to announce that for the 2024/25 year, NNAC has once again secured our A-rating (with a stable outlook) from Global Credit Ratings (GCR), an affiliate of Moody's Investor Services. This, the 13th consecutive year that we've maintained our 'A' rating, is a testament to our ability to perform at the top end of our peer group." As much as our 'A' rating gives our policyholders comfort that as their insurer we're able to provide for them during their time of need, it should also give our intermediary partners confidence as they plan for the future. This consistent performance underscores our resilience and dedication to our stakeholders. NNAC - People you can talk to Isla Simoes #nnac #insurance #arating #stableoutlook #GRCrating

The theme, "Change Perspective," was all about making room for creativity, collaboration, and progress for yourself and others. Our amazing ladies embraced the physical and mental challenges, and it was incredible to see their inner child shine through every activity. Laughter, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose filled the room, making it a day to remember. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event a beautiful success! • Returned Debit Orders: What It Means for Your #Insurance A bounced debit order can lead to your insurance policy lapsing, leaving you unprotected when you need it most. Always ensure your premiums are paid on time to maintain continuous coverage. What happens if your debit order is unpaid? If your debit order is declined by your bank, you will be charged. This charge varies from bank to bank, but the costs add up! An unpaid debit order has serious consequences for your policy. Insurers are obliged, under the Short-term Insurance Act’s Policyholder Protection Rules, to provide clients with a grace period for the payment of a premium, which is not less than 15 days after the initial debit order date before your policy is suspended. If you don’t pay within the 15 days of grace allowed, you don’t have cover. It may take a few days for the payment to be rejected and more days for the insurer to be alerted to this fact. Therefore, you may only be notified that your premium has bounced as much as two weeks later. The sheer volume of unpaid debit orders means the insurer cannot individually contact each policyholder and will simply process a double debit order in the succeeding month. You may be left without cover between the end of the grace period and the processing of the double debit order. *Most unpaid debit orders are rejected for lack of funds – and if the individual cannot pay one premium this month, they are unlikely to be able to pay double the next month. It is advised to raise the funds to ensure the double premium is paid the following month. If the subsequent double debit order is also unpaid, then the policy may be suspended and placed in a state of lapse. This means that even if the individual subsequently catches up the premium, the insurer may decline to reinstate the policy. It’s encouraged to make every effort to find a solution which enables continued coverage, ensuring financial stability. Contact your broker to discuss payment options and avoid lapses in coverage. • Under-Insured? The Hidden Risks You Need to Know Being under-insured means you might not have enough coverage to fully recover from a loss. This can lead to significant out-of-pocket expenses. Ensure your coverage aligns with the value of your assets to avoid financial strain. Principle of Average Underinsurance arises when the amount for which an object is insured is less than its actual value. This triggers the principle of average, allowing insurers to reduce their liability proportionally to the percentage by which an object is underinsured. This principle encourages policyholders to disclose the true value of their insured objects. Policyholders who misrepresent the value to reduce their premiums are penalised through the average principle. *Here's a case study related to Home Insurance that explains how your insurer will settle a claim in the event that you are under-insured:* A client insures his Ballito holiday home for R2,000,000.00, but its replacement value is R3,000,000.00. If the home is damaged in a flood and the repair cost is R1,500,000.00, the principle of average is applied. The policyholder will receive only a percentage of the claim based on the ratio of coverage to the actual value of the home. In this case, the policyholder will receive 2/3 (or 66.67%) of the claim, which is R1,000,000.00. Check your policy with your broker to ensure you're fully protected. • What If? Preparing for the Worst with your Insurance Policy What if the unexpected happens? From natural disasters like floods, fires, and landslides to major accidents, worst-case scenarios can test your insurance coverage. It's essential to understand how your policy responds to different situations to avoid unpleasant surprises. Case Study: Damage to Retaining Wall Caused by KZN Floods (2022) In this case study, the insured’s wall collapsed due to the floods and the claim was rejected because the policy didn’t cover loss caused by defective workmanship, materials, and design. The insurer's contractor found that the wall, lacking weep holes, didn’t comply with SANS regulations and was built incorrectly. The insured's contractor, however, argued that the wall collapsed due to extraordinary rainfall and mudslides, which exceeded normal conditions. Despite the insured's challenge, the insurer maintained the rejection based on their loss adjuster's findings that the wall wasn't built to engineering specifications. However, OSTI found that both the flood and defective design contributed to the loss and recommended the insurer settle 50% of the repair costs, which the insurer agreed to. It is essential to understand what your cover entails and in which scenarios you may not be covered. Talk to your broker today to ensure you're prepared for any situation and that your property is properly maintained to avoid your claim from being rejected.
