Breaking News From the UK! The UK is taking a major step forward in supporting cultivated meat with the launch of Europe’s first regulatory sandbox, backed by £1.6 million in government funding. This funding will help the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) conduct rigorous safety assessments for cultivated meat products, ensuring they meet the UK's novel foods regulatory framework. We’re excited about these developments as we continue to expand in the UK and help bring cultivated meat and food products to mainstream markets faster and more efficiently. Replication is a crucial component of any successful R&D operation. It helps scientists trust their results. Confirming the findings of one study with another helps us trust that the discovery is real and reliable. Navigating this challenge in biotech requires strong processes and leadership. Meet Pieter, one of our research scientists here at Newform Foods. When he’s not performing or touring with his bands (yes, multiple bands), he’s working hard to build our food technology platform. Pieter had a hand in helping us launch Africa’s first cultivated lamb meatballs and has been spearheading our media development operations. He’s always had a hunger to increase his pool of knowledge and obtain a fundamental understanding of a variety of topics–which is what attracted him to the world of cellular agriculture. Driven by a desire to solve problems efficiently and deliver exceptional results, his interest in science and technology has always persevered despite investing in a wide range of passions. Pieter holds an MSc in Biotechnology with Cum Laude honours from Stellenbosch University and has extensive experience in optimising bioprocesses from lab to semi-industrial scale. His work has led to the commercialisation of a novel wine yeast strain, which resulted in peer-reviewed publications. He also served as Project Lead for biotech R&D initiatives, including organic high-acidity vinegar production at Chempac (Pty) in South Africa. Currently, as one of our R&D Scientists, he leads the Media Development Department, where he focuses on optimising our food technology platform for cultivated meat and food production. Pieter directs his efforts towards driving innovation in cell culture medium development, reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and minimising the impact on the environment and animals. “I love new challenges that allow for collective and personal progression and what better challenge than to Shape Tomorrow’s Food Landscape with impactful research to propel a technology that can create a more sustainable and ethical future?" #cultivatedfoodproducts #cellularagriculture #foodsystems #foodtech
