The European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions fell 8.3% in 2023 as a surge in renewable energy installations helped displace coal. This means the bloc’s emissions have declined 37% since 1990, while its economy has grown 68% over the same period. The divergence indicates “the continued decoupling of emissions and economic growth,” the European Commission said in an update, adding that the region is on track to reach its target of reducing emissions by at least 55% by 2030. https://lnkd.in/dXEvWvPM #solar #renewables #climatechange

“Africa’s potential for renewable energy is unmatched globally. The continent is rich in diverse renewable resources, each offering a path toward sustainable growth that is less dependent on fossil fuels and more aligned with global climate commitments,” said Minister of Energy and Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. https://lnkd.in/dG-YQPGP #solar #southafrica

China’s carbon emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2024 and were flat in the third quarter, providing another indication that emissions may have already peaked. This is largely because solar power output was up 44% in the three months to end-September, compared to a year before, while wind power generation grew 24%. In the first nine months of 2024, China installed 161GW of new solar capacity and 39GW of wind, per CREA data. https://lnkd.in/dsgn7BUY #solar

Renewables accounted for more than half (52%) of all electricity generated in the European Union in the second quarter 2024, new data shows. The advance of renewables sent fossil fuel consumption lower and helped reduce electricity prices for households in the bloc’s capital cities by 8%, relative to the same period a year before, according to the European Commission. Renewables’ share of the mix was up 6 percentage points in a year as generation from fossil fuels slumped to just 24% of the total. https://lnkd.in/dG3CNcCD

South Africa will only meet its current energy demand requirement by 2040, according to a report by Standard Bank and Cresco Group. The market assessment of South Africa indicates solar PV and wind installed capacity, utility and rooftop, will increase from 10 GW this year, to 37 GW by 2030 and 77 GW by 2040. https://lnkd.in/esBG2f6J

In the third quarter alone, energy regulator Nersa registered more than 2,000MW of projects for private sector off-takers. This brings the total new registrations for the year to date to 3,300MW and the total since last year, when registrations started after the government lifted the licensing threshold, to 8,700MW, of which 6,430 is already installed, according to Eskom. Deputy electricity and energy minister Samantha Graham-Maré said: “It demonstrates that confidence in SA’s renewable energy market is growing, and we will build on this momentum. Our goal is to accelerate even more gigawatts of renewable energy by continuing to remove unnecessary institutional red tape and making SA an even more attractive proposition for investors.” https://lnkd.in/dJdGKFnd #solar #southafrica
