18 July 2024 is Mandela Day. This day is celebrated annually to honour the life and legacy of former South African President and Anti-Apartheid Activist, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This day is a call for people, communities, and organisations to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own lives and communities. In South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is prioritizing its 2024 Mandela Day work on its social justice such as early childhood development, food security and just cities. On Mandela Day, let us honour the life of Madiba by encouraging everyone to identify those in need around you and do what you can to make a difference for them. World Population Day is a day dedicated to focusing on the importance of population issues. These issues include but are not limited to family planning, distribution of wealth, access to resources, gender equality, maternal health and environmental impacts to human rights. Did you know that countries such as China and India are categorised as overpopulated with their populations sitting at approximately 1.4 billion and 1.3 billion respectively? Corporate Wellness Week is observed during the first week of July and it is an opportunity to raise awareness of the need to create a healthy work environment. A healthy work environment helps maintain productivity, decrease absenteeism, and prevent occupational health conditions. Here are some tips to keep a work life balance and to improve productivity: 1.    Take about 10 000 steps throughout the day to boost your energy and lower your risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes. 2.    Set an alarm to go off every hour or so to remind you to stand up and move around. World Vitiligo Day takes place annually on the 25th of June. On this day we look to raise awareness of the skin condition, at the same time dispelling any myths and stigma around the condition.  What is Vitiligo? Vitiligo is a skin disorder that affects 1% to 2 % of the population. This disorder is life long and it causes discoloration in different areas of the body as well as a total loss of skin colour. symptoms include:  • Premature greying or whitening of hair. • Losing colour in one’s eyelashes or eyebrows. • Discoloured patches in any area of the skin. Facts about Vitiligo: • Vitiligo has no cure – The condition can be managed through diet, skincare by not exposing yourself to too much sunlight, using organic lotions, exercise and stress reduction. • The cause is still unknown - There are different types of vitiligo, and these different types have different causes • Vitiligo is not contagious - Vitiligo cannot be spread from one person to another via physical contact. • It can occur anywhere on the body - It is found in all areas of the skin, around the eyes, mouth, elbows, wrists, hands, and ankles. “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!” World Blood Donor Day aims to raise awareness around the need for safe blood, to thank and honour those blood donors who help make transfusions possible and to encourage regular blood donation by suitable donors. Both paid and unpaid blood donors are honoured on this day for their life-saving donations over the years and for inspiring others to understand the great impact of donating on both patients and donors.
