EVACUATION PROCEDURES Evacuation procedures should be in place for each workplace and everyone on site needs to know what to do and where to go in an emergency. No two emergencies are the same so understand the differences in your plans for different events. There will be people who have been assigned specific roles in an emergency, so make sure everyone knows what they are and how these people will be identified. What to do in the event of an emergency - Stay calm - If you hear an alarm or the emergency signal, stop what you’re doing, go to the place of safety and stay there until the All Clear is given - Call Emergency Services - Follow the instructions of wardens and those in charge - Do not use lifts in the case of a fire - Stay close to the ground if there is smoke - Only attempt to deal with an emergency such as fire or a chemical spill if you feel confident and have been trained - Do not endanger yourself Let us help you! www.primeohs.co.za #PrimeOHS #exite #evacuate #procedure

Think of the Next Person There are many things that need to go right for a worksite or company to maintain a high level of safety and experience zero or a low number of injuries over a long period of time. One characteristic of a workforce that is very important to achieve low injury numbers is having employees who consider how their decisions affect others. When workers think about each other when preparing for a task or doing a task, everyone wins. An important rule of thumb when making a decision is “to think of the next person”. Summary Great things happen when everyone begins to consider how their decisions will affect others. Realize that your own safety depends not only on your decisions but choices made by every other person working around you. A choice as simple as placing a heavy box on a table instead of the floor can save a coworker from experiencing a severe back injury that places them out of work for months. www.primeohs.co.za #PrimeOHS #Safety #ThinkSafety

Proactive Versus Reactive Safety Approach Many of the safety rules and procedures that are in place were “written in blood,” meaning they came about from a previous incident that caused an injury, property loss incident, or fatality. When we implement a safeguard after an incident occurs, we are taking a reactive approach to safety. We can look at the majority of rules and procedures that we follow today as a proactive approach toward safety; however, many of them came from a reactive position. Something bad had to happen first before many of the rules and procedures were put into place. Being proactive is the best way to approach safety in the workplace. Addressing and eliminating hazards before work begins should be a main goal of a company’s safety program. Many workers or the management in some companies would rather take a reactive approach with some hazards rather than being proactive and eliminating them upfront. This mindset puts everyone on site, and the company as a whole, at risk for an incident or injury. www.primeohs.co.za #PrimeOHS #Safety #Proactive

Good Enough Mindset For most of us, we have been doing our jobs long enough to know what is the right way to do something and what falls short to “good enough.” When it comes to workplace safety, “good enough” does not cut it. When addressing hazards, having this mindset will lead to exposure to risk that will eventually result in incidents and injuries occurring. It is important to take the time not only to identify hazards but also take the proper time and energy to mitigate them. What Leads to the “Good Enough” Mindset? There are many reasons why individuals may be tolerant of unnecessary risk during work tasks. A few of these reasons could include: Complacency. For individuals who have been doing their work for long periods of time, complacency can be one of the biggest challenges to avoiding a “good enough” mindset. Lack of training or understanding. Some workers, especially those less experienced, may not understand the importance of taking certain steps to protect themselves and those around them while completing their work. The culture of their work group or the company as a whole supports tolerating risk. When supervisors or coworkers do not follow safety rules or procedures, then others around them are more willing also not to follow the rules and settle for good enough. Lack of energy or fatigue. There are many times we do not feel 100%. Lack of energy is a huge problem across the U.S. with all the demands we deal with both at home and at work. When fatigue or lack of energy becomes an issue, our work suffers, including being safe while at work. How to Avoid a “Good Enough” Mindset Always aim to do your best. Oftentimes, we know what the expectation is or how things should be done, so the only thing left is to put action to that knowledge and do the right thing. Not only will doing your best help to ensure less chance of injury, but it also builds your personal reputation as a worker. Recognize when you are not feeling your best or when your energy levels are low. If you find yourself leaning towards making the easy choice instead of the right choice, then take steps to combat the urge to cut corners. Remind yourself why certain safety policies or best practices are in place and that the expectation is to follow them. Have others who excel in their job double-check your work or give you feedback. Reaching out to others allows you to ensure you fully understand the task and the hazards, which can lead to identifying ways to improve. Summary “Good enough” is a mindset that plagues individuals both at work and at home in different aspects of life. When we aim lower than what we know our potential is, we are leaving a lot on the table. When it comes to safety at work, aiming lower than what is expected can lead to serious injuries. #PrimeOHS #Safety #Injuries #Mindset

Five Common Contributing Factors for Workplace Injuries There is a long list of possibilities for what can contribute to or cause a workplace injury. Unsafe conditions and unsafe acts are often the root cause of why injuries occur. Unsafe acts, especially, are a huge factor in the majority of workplace injuries. According to PA Training for Health & Safety, an estimated 80 out of 100 people who are involved in an incident are at fault for it. In this safety talk, we will look at five common contributing factors to workplace injuries. The Five Contributing Factors Distractions- There are many distractions that can take away focus from the work task at hand. These distractions can be in our actual work environment, such as clutter or noise, or a mental distraction. Mental distractions stemming from what is going on in our home life can serve as a huge disruption to getting tasks done safely at work. Complacency- Many workers do the same tasks over and over for many years. Because of this familiarity with their work, complacency can set in. Complacency leads to taking shortcuts or not following normal work procedures. When this occurs, an injury is more likely to occur on the job. Poor Housekeeping- Housekeeping is a major issue in some workplaces. Poor housekeeping leads to many different hazards. Some common injuries include slips, trips, falls, lacerations, sprains, and strains. A lack of housekeeping often is a signal that there are larger safety issues at hand. Poor Preplanning- The lack of planning leads to a huge number of issues. When the hazards of a new task are not evaluated prior to work beginning, hazards are going to be left uncontrolled. This leaves employees at risk for injury. Poor preplanning can also lead to issues with not having the correct equipment, tools, materials, personnel, and training for the work, as well as a lack of time to get the job done. All of these issues have their own unique safety implications. Taking Shortcuts- A major unsafe act that results in many workplace injuries is taking shortcuts. There are various reasons why a worker takes a shortcut, but eventually, enough safety shortcuts will lead to a workplace injury. Summary These are just five of the more common factors that cause or contribute to workplace injuries. Evaluate your work today and see if any of these five items mentioned are at play. Work to eliminate these factors to ensure you are able to work safely. #PrimeOHS #Safety #Injuries #workplace
